SIUSLAW NEWS ❚ SATURDAY, MAY 6, 2017 Local stables offering Adult Riding Club With the success of its recent Adult Riding Club, C&M Stables will continue the program with a new summer session. The program includes a 2- hour ride during each of the months of June, July and August. The 2 hour rides will follow the trail and beach, with a 30-minute orientation before the first ride. Members who are interested in learning how to groom and saddle their horses as a part of the experience are welcome to come 30 minutes before each ride. C&M Stables will pro- vide members with the tools necessary and offer instruction on how it is done. 3 B Rannow wins OCPGA tourney For some, grooming and saddling are some of the best parts of riding. There will also be a fall Riding Club session beginning in September that will run for through December. More information about the fall session will be available in August. The Riding Club is open to riders age 18 years or older, and no previous riding experi- ence is necessary. Eugene Emeralds to host anthem tryouts today The Eugene Emeralds will be hosting National Anthem auditions to find performers for the 2017 season on Saturday, May 6, from 10 a.m. to noon at PK Park. On the day of auditions, participants can enter through the ballpark’s 1st-base entrance and register upon arrival. Performances will be a first come, first sing basis. Singers can leave at the completion of their audition and will be contacted at a later date. National Anthem perform- ers will have one minute and thirty seconds to perform the “Star Spangled Banner,” and lyrics must be memorized. Heceta Head Lightstation seeks guides for season The Heceta Head Lightstation and Keeper’s House needs tour guides for 2017. Guides greet visitors and share the rich history of this special Oregon treasure! Considered the most pho- tographed lighthouse in the United States, the Heceta Head Lighthouse offers free public tours to learn about the lightstation and the Oregon coast. Tours continue from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day. Thompson among Beavers named Academic All-District CORVALLIS — Siuslaw High School graduate and Oregon State University start- ing pitcher Jake Thompson was among three Beavers named to the CoSIDA (Collegiate Sports Information Directors of America) Academic All- District 8 team. Oregon State is the only Division-I team across the eight districts to have three players selected. All three are now eligible to become Academic All- Americans, a list scheduled to be announced June 2. To be eligible to be honored academically by CoSIDA, stu- dent-athletes must be a starter or a significant reserve, have a cumulative grade point average of 3.3 or above and not be a freshman or first-year transfer. Voting is done by members of CoSIDA from each district. District 8 is comprised of the states of Alaska, Arizona, California, Hawaii, Nevada, Oregon, Utah and Washington. Thompson was also a Pac-12 All-Academic Honorable Mention in 2016. An economics major, he holds a 3.60 cumulative GPA. Thompson, a Florence native, is tied for the lead nationally with nine wins and is fourth with a 1.07 earned run average. Teams are batting just .159 against him in 76 innings. The Beavers hold the highest cumulative team GPA among men’s teams at Oregon State. The team’s GPA entering the spring term stood at 3.30. The club finished with a 3.17 GPA in the winter.
