THE SIUSLAW NEWS SCHOOL NEWSLETTER ❚ April 2017 SCHOOL ZONE A Monthly Newsletter for the Siuslaw and Mapleton Schools and Florence Community PTA 110 TH ANNUAL R HODODENDRON F ESTIVAL Rhody Days opens May 18 with Queen Rhododendra, King of the Coast Coronation A ll 13 members of the 2017 Rhododendron Court are preparing for the 110th annual Rhododen- dron Festival, May 18 to 21 in Florence. Senior Court Princess- es Eyza Abbas, Chehalis Stinger, Claire Waggoner, Abby Watkins and Jewel Roby and Senior Court Princes Benjamin Cahoon, Michael Larson and Kyle Doran will mentor the Ju- nior Court Princesses, first- grader Clover Holbrook, second-grader Chloe Clark, third-grader Madi Jerabek, fourth-grader Arianna Wil- liams and fifth-grader Ava Center. Mapleton School District has three students participating this year and Siuslaw has 10. The Senior and Junior Courts are working to be “Always Ready to Rhody” with the Rhododendron Court Committee to develop leadership and communication skills and make public appearances in the area. This year’s Queen Rhododendra and King of the Coast will be crowned in a coronation ceremony on Thursday, May 18, at Florence Events Center, 715 Quince St. Tickets are $10, and $6 for 18 and under. The Rhododendron Festi- val has many more oppor- tunities for youth involve- ment, including the Davis Shows Carnival — open- ing at 4 p.m. on Wednes- day, May 17, on the Port of Siuslaw grounds at the east end of Historic Old Town Florence. The carnival runs through Sunday at 8 p.m. Discount tickets are avail- able now through Wednes- day, May 17, at 1 p.m. at FlorenceChamber.com and at the Visitor’s Center. Saturday, May 20, features the Rhody Festival Junior COURTESY PHOTOS Parade at noon at Miller Park with kids’ games to follow at Siuslaw High School. Siuslaw Middle School will also show off its STEAM fair (science, tech- nology, engineering, art and math) from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday, May 21, features the 110th annu- al Grand Floral Parade down Highway 101 to Old Town Florence. The parade starts at noon, and people are encouraged to line up early. Stu- dents picked from a list of top 10 movies currently at the box office. Ovalle helped students Cinema Studies Department.
