Since having the track resurfaced back in September, Mapleton High School athletic director Aaron Longo has needed three consecutive days of sunshine in order for the resurfacing to be dry enough to paint. “And we’re still waiting,” said Longo, who renamed the event and moved forward with the meet — minus any track events accept for the 1,500 meters and 3,000 meters. Something else made Thursday’s meet one-of-a-kind: The hammer throw, which is a field event that hasn’t occurred in Mapleton for more than two decades. Fittingly, the Sailors swept the event, as well as the entire meet, with Sailor boys and girls teams scoring 50 points each. Alsea was second for the boys with See SAILORS 3B Aquarium hosting Kids’ Dash today NEWPORT — Otters, sharks and puffins are among the main attractions at the Oregon Coast Aquarium, but this morning humans will take center stage as they compete in the fifth annual Oregon Coast Aquarium 5K and Kids’ Dash. The 5K is open to all runners whether they are speedy, slow or some- where in-between. The Kids’ Dash is for aspiring little athletes ages two to nine years old. Race T-shirts are available to pre- order for $5. Shirts will also be available for sale on race day, but size availability may be limited. The Oregon Coast Aquarium is located at 2820 S.E. In the new round-robin format adopted by the Far West League this season, teams face each other multi- ple times in one week, with one game scheduled for Tuesdays, followed by a dou- bleheader on Fridays. Last week, the Vikings got three looks at Douglas, with Siuslaw’s softball team host- ing the Trojans on Tuesday and the baseball team on the road at Winston. At home, the Lady Viks struggled with a series of errors, six in all, against a hard-hitting Douglas rotation that connected for 9 hits in the game. Meanwhile, Siuslaw senior catcher Nikki Launius went 2-for-3 at the plate, including a double and an RBI to lead Siuslaw’s offense. The Lady Viks left a run- ner stranded in scoring posi- tion on third base in four out of the first five innings before finally scoring 2 runs in the sixth off of batting from Launius. It wasn’t enough to squelch the Trojans, who went on to win, 8-2. The win moved Douglas into the Far West’s No. 1 spot at 3-0 (4-4) in league. The Lady Vikings are 1-3 in league (4-9). From the pitcher’s circle, Lady Viks senior Heidi Jones struck out 8 and walked 1. In games around the Far West on Tuesday, South Umpqua defeated Marshfield, 7-2, and North Bend overwhelmed Brookings-Harbor, 13-0 in just two innings. That same day in Winston, the Viking baseball team did- n’t fare much better, with the Trojans knocking home 13 runs in the first two innings. Vikings first baseman Gabe Simington, a sopho- more at Mapleton, smacked a screamer for a 2-run home run in the top of the fourth inning that cut the Trojans’ lead to 13-2. Siuslaw then managed to bring home 3 more runs in the top of the fifth to avoid See SIUSLAW 3B Dunes City Triathlon seeks volunteers Dunes City is gearing up to host its 5th annual Oregon Dunes Triathlon and Duathlon on Saturday, May 13. Most volun- teers work only half a day and all volunteers will receive a free event T-shirt. Volunteers are needed between about 6 a.m. and 1 p.m. on race day, May 13. Anyone wants to be part of this exciting and fun event can call Dunes City Hall at 541-997-3338.
