SIUSLAW NEWS ❚ WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 6, 2017 Join Gem Walkers for April Fools jaunt This is a special April Fools Day walking event will be hosted by the Yachats Coastal Gems Volkswalkers. No matter the weather, walkers will gather at the main parking lot at South Beach State Park, just south of Newport, for a level jaunt along the seashore, bay, wet- lands and harbor. Learn more about the many Marine Science entities here in South Beach (NOAA, Hatfield Marine Science Center, Oregon Coast Aquarium) and travel part of the Tsunami Route for the area. Meet at 10 a.m. to sign in for an easy 3-mile (5K) or six- mile (10K) walk. Walk fast, walk slow — just walk at your own pace. This walk goes by the Rogue Brewery twice for those who may be hungry, thirsty or need a time out. As always, leashed pets are welcome on walks, but bring water and clean-up materials for pets. Oregon Coast Aquarium to host Kids’ Dash NEWPORT — Otters, sharks and puffins are among the main attractions at the Oregon Coast Aquarium, but on the morning of April 22, humans will take center stage as they compete in the fifth annual Oregon Coast Aquarium 5K and Kids’ Dash. The 5K is open to all run- ners whether they are speedy, slow or somewhere in- between. The Kids’ Dash is for aspir- ing little athletes ages two to nine years old. Parents are invited to accompany their children on this closed-course 1K run through the aquarium’s grounds. Oregon Coast Aquarium 5K and Kids’ Dash runners and walkers receive a race bib, photo and free admission to the aquarium for the day. All proceeds benefit the ani- mal care fund at the Oregon Coast Aquarium. Race entry is $35 for the 5K, and $20 for the Kids’ Dash. A $5 early registration discount is available through March 31. Discounts are also available for aquarium members. Race T-shirts are available to preorder for $5. Shirts will also be available for sale on race day, but size availability may be limited. Hooper had a sweep of the hur- dles races, winning the 110- hurdles in 16.0 for the state’s best time this season, and the state’s third-best time in the intermediate hurdles at 47.75. In the throws, junior Trent Reavis threw the shot put for 46-11 and discus for 139-2, winning both events and and landing the second best marks in the 4A at this point of the season. Reavis was also third in the javelin with a mark of 151- 10. Meanwhile, Siuslaw fresh- man Ryan Rendon-Padilla had the day’s second-best throw at 158-6. The Viks also got second- place finishes from junior Quincy Rusk in the 100 meters (12.27); freshman Brendon Jensen in the 800 meters (2:12.26); and junior Isaac Griffes in the 3,000 meters (10:01.88). Third-place finishes went to junior Roen Rolling-Khufu in the 200 meters (25.95); senior Jack Pickell in the 1,500 meters (4:32.11); and junior Kyle King in the triple jump (38- 1.5). In the 4x1 relay, the Vikings won with splits by junior Ryan Lee, junior Jake Hickson, Rusk and Hooper in 49.17. Lee, Rusk, Pickell and Hooper teamed up in the 4x4 relay to place second with a time of 3:51.69. 1 run scored. Fellow senior Jenicah Decker went 2-for-5 with 1 RBI, a single and a triple. “It was nice to see Jenicah get some excellent results at the plate,” O’Mara said. “She’s worked diligently throughout the off season and her efforts are paying off.” The Lady Viks joined the Viking baseball team on the road at Sweet Home Thursday, with both teams moving their game up a day to avoid predict- ed rains. The Lady Viks were the ones sent home early in that match- up, with the Huskies nabbing 14 runs in the second inning for a 15-5 lead. From there, Sweet Home was able to end things in the fifth inning, 24-5. The Viking baseball team went on to play all seven innings but weren’t able to open the season with a win, falling to the Huskies 8-1. Drew Rannow provided Siuslaw’s only run on an RBI, with Kelby White connecting for the team’s only hit. As of press deadlines, today’s home baseball double- header has been moved to Junction City, beginning at 1 p.m. The JV game has been can- celed, however. The Lady Viks are still scheduled to host Bandon, beginning at 1 p.m. Wilson in the javelin (143-6) for a season record; junior Cole Spencer in the high jump at 5- 4; and senior AJ Foster in both the long jump (18-07) and triple jump (34-09). Spencer was also second in triple jump (31-10) and pole vault (6-0). Wilson landed second in the discus (80-08). Other top finishers included second place for freshman Nate Roane (104-02); third place for freshman Nathan Neece (30- 11.5); fourth place for senior Zach Croson in the discus (78- 07). Trout stocking is complete in the other North Coast lakes, but there are still hold over trout available and winter can be a great time to fish for them as these trout will be larger now, and getting hungry. Casting spinners, drifting bait or using a bobber and jig can be effective. SILETZ RIVER: Steelhead The river is shaping up after last week’s rain. Steelhead fishing is fair. Drift boaters are having fair success from Moonshine Park to Siletz and bank anglers are catching hatchery fish in the Siletz gorge. Casting spinners, drifting bait or using a bobber and jig can be effective. WILSON RIVER: Steelhead Fishing was slow on the Wilson last weekend due to high water and marginal con- ditions. It should be dropping into prime shape by the end of the week and through the weekend. There should be plenty of broodstock hatchery and wild steelhead around, and there have been some big fish coming off the Wilson this year. All the usual techniques such as side drifting, float fishing, drift fishing, or pulling plugs or divers and bait should be effective. During high water use brighter colors and larger pre- sentations. SIUSLAW RIVER: Chinook, steelhead The Siuslaw River and Lake Cr. are open for hatchery win- ter steelhead. Fishing is slow. Casting spinners, drifting bait or using a bobber and jig can be effective. MID COAST LAKES: The trout stocking schedule for 2017 is available online and trout have been stocked in some lakes. Fishing for the various warm water fish species will slow as water temperatures cool. There are numerous lakes in the Florence area that can provide good opportunity.
