Tables for the bazaar can be rented for $35. Participants set up, sell and keep the prof- its. Proceeds from table rentals and donations for this event go to support the efforts to repair, retrofit and re-open the Siuslaw Regional Aquatics and Recreation Center (SRAC,) otherwise known as the Mapleton Pool. Twenty-two local nonprofit organizations were awarded grant checks by Western Lane Community Foundation at the Rotary Club luncheon meeting on Tuesday, March 14. These funds will further their worth- while projects that fall within the four Western Lane Community Foundation (WLCF) grant criteria areas of focus; Culture, Medicine/ Science, Education, and Social/Civic Services. The foundation received 32 applications requesting nearly $100,000 in funds. The Rotary Club of Florence established the WLCF in 1974 as a community trust, a private nonprofit organization, to attract, administer and distrib- ute private charitable resources for the benefit of residents in western Lane County. Through these resources. The foundation helps sustain and enhance the quality of life in western Lane County by supporting nonprofit organiza- tions operating in all fields of community interest. The foundation manages current assets of $5,000,000, which consist of Designated Funds, assets that are estab- lished by donors to support cer- tain organizations; Scholarship Funds, where donors set crite- ria for awards; Field of Interest Funds, donors who set a crite- ria of a particular area of com- munity service that they want the grant distributed to; and General Funds, which are flex- ible resources the Foundation can apply to address changing community needs. Community Health Fair returns to ‘Jumpstart’ health Florence’s annual Com- munity Health Fair is back, with has a new name, “Jumpstart Your Health.” “We believe those who attend seeking a way to improve their health will find the jump-start they need to make either the subtle or sig- nificant changes,” said event coordinator Linda Lydick. “The information gained from Friday’s exhibitors, Saturday’s seminars and Sunday’s Kids’ Day activities could jump-start people’s knowledge and com- mitment to better health.” The event will be held at the Florence Events Center April 7-9. Admission is free all three days. Each day at noon, the first 100 people will receive a free healthy lunch. Saturday’s lunch will be provided by the Florence Seventh-day Adventist Church and its members. Sunday’s lunch will come from Subway Sandwiches. On Friday, April 7, from noon to 5 p.m., attendees can interact with more than 30 exhibiting experts from across the healthcare spectrum. Also on Friday, the public can chose from two classes. From 1 to 5 p.m., Western Lane Ambulance will offer its adult certification class in CPR/First Aid/AED, free to the first 20 people who pre- register by email at lindasveg- gies @gmail.com. Or participants can attend a free overview class on mental health first aid presented by Jonathan Betlinski, M.D., of the Department of Psychiatry at Oregon Health and Science University, from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. Betlinski trains resident physicians in public psychia- try. Betlinski’s Friday session will present an overview of what to look for and how to respond in a mental health emergency. The class will prepare aten- dees for the following work- shops that take place from 1 to 5 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. Workshop topics will include first-aid for mental health, depression, substance abuse, anxiety and psychosis. There is a $20 fee to cover Saturday’s and Sunday’s books and materials. “The Florence and Mapleton areas suffer enough from the ravages of poor mental health. That’s why we’ve invited one of the best in Oregon to come help,” explained Lydick. “Those that complete all three sessions will receive national- ly-recognized certification in mental health first-aid.” On Saturday, April 8, atten- dees may choose from a vari- ety of other helpful seminars by experts from different areas of healthcare. Seminars start every half hour from 1 to 4:30 p.m. The line-up of speakers is still shaping up and will be posted on the event’s Facebook page. Sunday will be the annual 5K fun walk and run and a day of activities for kids from 1 to 5 p.m. There will be a giant obstacle course for older kids and a bounce house for the younger ones, and other games, prizes and exhibits that include tips for living health- fully to 100. “And there’s the “Jumpstart” connection for the kids, with the bounce house,” said Lydick. The Red Cross Bloodmobile will host an on-site blood drive on Sunday from noon to 5 p.m. The pre-registration dead- line for the 5K to receive a T- shirt prior to the run is Monday, March 20. Pre-registration by email at lindasveggies@gmail.com is recommended. On-site regis- tration for the 5K begins at 8 a.m. on the day of the event. The 5K starts at 9 a.m. Entry fees help benefit the Siuslaw Area Partnership to Prevent Substance Abuse (SAPPSA). Fee is $20 including shirt, or $10 without. The Jumpstart Your Health Community Health Fair is pre- sented by the Florence Seventh-day Adventist Church and underwritten by the Korando Dental Group.
