With only six team members, every player contributed in every game, with players performing at all six positions throughout the tourney with no breaks. After winning their last tournament, the Lady Viks moved up in the CEVA rankings to No. 87. In last weekend’s tournament, the Lady Viks beat Eugene’s No. 82-ranked Webfoot team, as well as No. 83-ranked Blues Power and No. 86-ranked Hillsboro Black in pool play. In the afternoon bracket play, the Lady Viks defeated Volleyball West, which also came into the matchup undefeated. The next match was for the tournament’s first place title against Willamette Valley 14U Gold, ranked No. 81. New rankings will be issued this week, with the 14U Gold Lady Viks expected to move up eight spots in rankings. One tournament remains before the Reginal Tournament at the Portland Expo Center, May 6 and 7. “I’m very proud of these girls and so are their parents,” said coach Kari Blake. OSMB campaign offers boating safety courses It may still feel like winter, but spring is right around the corner and the Oregon State Marine Board (OSMB) encourages boaters and passengers to enroll in a boating education course before the kickoff of the boating sea- son. During the week of March 19-25, as part of the “Spring Aboard — Take A Boating Education Course” campaign, many course providers are offering dis- counts or other incentives for students who enroll or complete a boating safe- ty education course. The OSMB offers boaters three course options: classroom, internet or equivalency exam. Classroom instruc- tors are certified by the Marine Board and teach a nationally-approved Boat Oregon classroom course. Internet courses are another option Nehalem Hatchery released 200 surplus winter steelhead into Vernonia pond, 57 into Lost Lake and 60 into Lake Lytle. These fish get fairly active in the lake and offer a unique fishing experience, especially when the rivers are blown out. Once in the lake they are considered “trout” and do not require a Combined Angling Tag. Anglers are reminded, however, that only one trout per day over 20 inch- es may be retained, and these fish will almost all be in that size range. Trout stocking is com- plete in the other North Coast lakes, but there are still hold over trout avail- able and winter can be a great time to fish for them as these trout will be larger now, and getting hungry. The trout stocking sched- ule for 2017 is available online, and printed ver- sions will be out soon. “If a boater has taken a safety course, they have a higher chance of having an enjoyable experience and so will their passengers.” —MariAnn McKenzie, OSMB and the Marine Board offers three courses that can be accessed from their website. Internet courses are designed to have the boater read the material, take a chapter quiz and, if they pass, progress to the next chapter. After the chapter quizzes have been completed and passed, there is a final exam. The agency also offers a free paddle- sports internet course for people new to this type of boating. Equivalency exams forego any instruction and are designed for more experienced boaters. Exams can be taken at the Marine Board office in Salem, or through your local county sheriff’s office. Law enforcement deputies serve as proctors for the exam. The Coast Guard Auxiliary and United States Power Squadron also offer excellent classroom and interactive online safety courses that are nationally approved and accepted by the Marine Board. “Educated boaters are safer on the water. Fishing for the vari- ous warm water fish species will slow as water temperatures cool. There are numerous lakes in the Florence area that can pro- vide good opportunity. ALSEA RIVER AND BAY: Steelhead Steelhead fishing is open on the Alsea River and list- ed tributaries. The river is shaping up after last week’s rain. Fishing is slow. Alsea Hatchery is having a below average return to the hatchery. Casting spinners, drift- ing bait or using a bobber and jig can be effective. SALMON RIVER: Steelhead The Salmon River is open for wild and hatchery steelhead. Fishing is slow. Wild winter steelhead can be retained on the Salmon River.
