SIUSLAW NEWS ❚ SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 18, 2017 5 A City Lights to show burlesque documentary Adult tap dancing class Join City Lights Cinemas for the documentary, “Burlesque: Heart of the Glitter Tribe,” on Tuesday, Feb. 21, at 7:30 p.m. “It’s not often that we get the opportunity to show a tasteful documentary about the world of burlesque dancing,” said Jared Anderson, education director at City Lights Cinemas. “Heart of the Glitter Tribe is sure to tantalize everyone whose interestested in the behind-the-scenes lifestyles of those who bare it all,” said Anderson. Directed by Jon Manning (“House of Last Things”) and produced by Julie Livingston (“Cooking from A to Zest”), the film provides insight into the world of neo-burlesque through the eyes of a diverse group of performers in Portland, Ore. Supported by a variety of inspirational performances, the documentary offers the thrill of on-stage burlesque but also goes behind the scenes to inter- view burlesque performers who are candid and real about their art. Respectfully revealing, Glitter Tribe explores how and why performers got started on the burlesque trail, the demons they’ve faced and conquered, costume creation, their jour- neys to find their own unique stage presence and more. Is burlesque today seduction or comedy? A love letter to absurdity or a challenging exploration of the weird? Performers talk about how they see the art evolving into neo-burlesque and what that means to them, even if it’s hard to define in a glitzy snap sen- tence that works for everyone. “One of the many great tri- umphs of Glitter Tribe is how it gives a really diverse range of performers their voice,” said Anderson. “Burlesque isn’t just for women — it’s for anyone of any gender who wants to per- form their heart out.” Male neo-burlesque per- formers offer a counterpart which explores masculinity without defining it, acknowl- edging and exploring stereo- types. “The whole documentary is a chance to see what non-judg- ment and commonality looks like, with everyone just telling their stories and supporting each other on the way,” Anderson said. Tickets for “Burlesque: Heart of the Glitter Tribe” are available at City Lights Cinema or online at www.city lightscinemas.com. Tickets are $9 for adults, or $8 for seniors and students.
