The Vikings opened Tuesday
night’s game at home against
Marshfield on a quick 7-0 run with
three offensive rebounds by junior
Kyle King and a freethrow from junior
Trent Reavis. But by the end of the
first quarter, the Pirates had tied things
up at 13-13.
At that point it became clear that the
game was going to be a barnburner,
with both teams battling for the chance
to emerge as the league’s second-place
team.
However, the second period
belonged to the Vikings, with Siuslaw
outscoring Marshfield 20 to 9 on
shooting from juniors Jared Brandt
and Jake Hickson, along with seniors
Marcos Reya-Ayala and Brogan
Cornish.
Reavis also had a pair of 3-pointers
in the quarter to help secure a 33-22
lead entering the half.

In the latest Oregon School
Activities
Association’s
(OSAA) districting model
proposals, Siuslaw would
either end up in a revised
five-classification Sky-Em
League or six-classification
Far West League district —
neither of which would
include
North
Bend,
Marshfield or any trips to
Grants Pass and Medford.
After the OSAA’s fourth
meeting by the Classification
and Districting Committee
on Jan. 30, the committee
submitted revised versions of
both its 5A and 6A models
this past Tuesday, along with
a football-only plan.
Under the proposed 6A
classification, the Vikings
would be part of an eight-
team 4A Far West League
with
Brookings-Harbor,
Cottage Grove, Creswell,
Douglas, Elmira, South
Umpqua and Sutherlin.
In the 5A model, Siuslaw
would be in an eight-team 3A
Sky-Em
division
with
Creswell, Elmira, Harrisburg,
Junction City, La Pine,
Philomath, Pleasant Hill and
Sisters.
Though the Sky-Em pro-
posal would eliminate 3-hour
(one-way)
trips
to
Brookings-Harbor, Grants
Pass and Medford for
Siuslaw, they would be
replaced by 3- to 4-hour trips
to La Pine and Sisters in
Central Oregon.
No changes were made to
the committee’s second draft
of its football-only plan, with
Siuslaw still slated to become
part of Special District 4
along with Cottage Grove,
Elmira,
Junction
City,
Marshfield, North Bend,
North Eugene Highlands and
Philomath.
The committee will meet
again Monday, Feb. 27, at the
OSAA office in Wilsonville.
Public testimony will take
place in the morning before
holding a closed work ses-
sion that afternoon.

The Lady Vikings had their hands
full Tuesday night at home against the
No. 6-ranked Lady Pirates (6-1).
Siuslaw senior Destinie Tatum had
11 points against Marshfield.
NED HICKSON/SIUSLAW NEWS
Viking senior Destine Tatum had a
standout game, leading in scoring (11),
rebounds (7), steals (3) and assists (3).
Meanwhile, Siuslaw senior post
Marika White nabbed 6 rebounds,
with sophomore Alyssa Richards
blocking a pair of shots to go with 2
points.
Senior guard Claire Waggoner had 4
points, with 2 points each from senior
Abby Watkins and White.
Despite the effort, the Pirates were
able to leave with a decisive 65-33
win, maintaining a tie with Douglas
for first place in the Far West League
entering the final three games of the
season.
That same night, Douglas defeated
Brookings-Harbor (67-50) and North
Bend beat South Umpoqua (53-34).
Last night, Siuslaw was on the road
at Brookings (after press deadlines)
and will be on the road again Tuesday
at Douglas.
The final game will be Friday at
home against North Bend at 6 p.m.
