Children’s Repertory of Oregon Workshops (CROW) presents Death by Dessert, an evening of decadent dessert samples, fine wine and enter- tainment on Saturday, Feb. 11, at 6:30 p.m. at Three Rivers Casino Resort Showroom. Things are going to get sin- fully sweet as local bakers, restaurants, caterers and pur- veyors of delicious treats vie for recognition and prizes at CROW’s first annual “Death by Dessert” fundraiser. Sweethearts and singles are both encouraged to tickle their tastebuds at this Valentine’s Day weekend party. Guests will be invited to try samples of a large variety of sweets and treats and then vote for their favorites, kick up their heels a bit to the Rat Pack stylings of “Buck and A Quarter Band” and participate in a silent auction and wine pull. And, all of this will be hap- pening while attendees are sup- porting a truly great cause — local youth in the arts. “Events like this are made possible by countless volunteer hours, generous dessert dona- tions by bakers, incredible silent auction donations from businesses and community members and lots of old fash- ioned hard work. We are so incredibly grateful to everyone who has helped us with coordi- nation of this event,” said CROW Artistic Director Melanie Heard. CROW is not shy in asking members of the public to make a difference in the lives of local children, simply by attending the event and having some sweet and tasty fun for Valentine’s Day weekend. Last year’s CROW fundrais- er was nearly sold out, so it is best to reserve your tickets early. Pre-sale tickets are $22 each, or $40 for a couple. At the door tickets are $25 each, and $45 for a couple, upon availability. Tickets include a large vari- ety of dessert samples includ- ing cakes, pies, cookies, brownies and unique desserts, live music, the opportunity to pull a fancy bottle of wine from a wine wall and to bid on the amazing baskets, prizes and desserts up for grabs. Doors will open at 6:30 p.m. Heard said, “From the very beginning, CROW has told the world that we are not your usual children’s theater. Well, this time, we want you to know that this is not your usual fundraiser. I’m wondering how many of you can make it out — alive?” The Death by Dessert theme goes hand-in-hand with CROW’s production of “The Addams Family,” a darkly comic musical coming Spring 2017 to Florence Events Center’s main stage. Writer’s on the River to offers free discussion session Writers on the River offers a free, drop-in group discussion and writing practice session for anyone seeking the time, space and support to write. The next writers gathering will take place on Saturday, Feb. 11, from 2 to 3 p.m., in the Bromley Room at the Siuslaw Public Library, 1460 Ninth St. This is not a critique group and no pre-registration or membership is required. Writers on the River also welcomes writers of all levels and genres to the next monthly workshop designed to identify their authentic voice and answer the call to write. “Writing from the Heart: Find Your True Voice,” will take place on Saturday, Feb. 18,, from 10 a.m. to noon, at the Florence Regional Arts Alliance, 120 Maple Street in Old Town. Through simple steps and experiential writing practices, participants can awaken their natural creative genius to craft Log Church offers renewal ceremony The Little Log Church and Museum in Yachats will pres- ent its annual Ceremony of Renewal and Commitment on Tuesday, Feb. 14, at 5:30 p.m. This will be the 22 year the Log Church is offering couples the opportunity to renew their vows in a group setting. Both married and unmarried committed cou- ples are invited to attend. Mary Crook, the independ- ent minister who has facilitat- ed the event since 1996, reports that hundreds of cou- ples have come to Yachats to renew their vows over the years. “For some couples it is a first-time experience; for oth- ers it has become an annual tradition — something fun and meaningful to do on Valentine’s Day,” she said. This year Ruth Mock, a popular local violinist, will play a selection of romantic pieces at the ceremony. In addition, each couple will be given a certificate as a memento of the occasion. The Valentine’s Day vow renewal has become a popu- lar fund raiser for the Little Log Church. The historic Little Log Church has been a landmark in Yachats for more than 85 years and is located at the corner of SW Third Street and Pontiac in the heart of town. Lady Elks offer scholarships The Florence Ladies of Elks, B.P.O.E. #1858, is accepting scholarship applica- tions from graduating seniors attending local area high schools. Students enrolled at Siuslaw, Mapleton, Reedsport, and Triangle Lake High Schools are eligible to apply. This year, one scholarship of $4,000 will be awarded to a student attending a four-year program at an institution of higher education. In addition, three $2,000 scholarships will be awarded to students attending commu- nity college or vocational training, with the intent of transferring to a four-year pro- gram at a later date. The deadline for all applica- tions is Saturday, March 4, 2017. Awards will be announced in April.
