Dec. 29 • MHS BB AT As the Oregon School Activities Association (OSAA) redistricting con- versation continues, during it’s latest meeting Dec. 12, the board offered new six-classification, five-classifica- tion and “football-only” proposals. Under the latest six-classification system, Siuslaw would be part of a Class 4A Far West League that includes: Cottage Grove, Creswell, Douglas, Elmira, South Umpqua and Sutherlin. “We aren’t happy with a model that has us going to Medford four times and Brookings once each league season.” — Chris Johnson, SHS athletic director However, should the OSAA decide to go with its most recent five-classifi- cation model, Siuslaw would become part of a Class 3A Southern Cascade League that includes Medford area schools St. Mary’s and Cascade Christian, as well as Grants Pass area schools Hidden Valley and North Valley. In short, the Vikings’ new league map would nearly double the miles the school already travels during a typical league season. It’s a proposal that Siuslaw High School athletic director Chris Johnson intends to oppose. “We aren’t happy with a model that has us going to Medford four times and Brookings once each league sea- son,” said Johnson, who pointed out that there are nine schools in that clas- sification closer to Siuslaw than the closest in that proposed league. “Plus, it adds roughly $30,000 to our travel budget,” he said. “We plan to be at the next meeting to voice our concerns.” The OSAA is also considering a “football-only” classification that would create a Special District 4 that includes teams from Cottage Grove, Elmira, Junction City, Marshfield, See OSAA 2B P ERRYDALE HS GIRLS : 4 P .
