6 A SIUSLAW NEWS ❚ WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 7, 2016 Library Tidings News about the Siuslaw Public Library Library Tidings, a regular feature of the Siuslaw News, features news about upcom- ing Siuslaw Public Library programs for adults and chil- dren, new books and videos, and other library news of interest to the community. Library Tidings by Kevin Mittge Colson Whitehead, a Pulitzer Prize winning finalist for his book John Henry Days, has now written the book which earned him the National Book Award. In The Underground Railroad. Cora is a slave on a cotton plan- tation in Georgia. Life is hellish for all the slaves but especially bad for Cora; an outcast even among her fellow Africans, she is com- ing into womanhood, where even greater pain awaits. When Caesar, a recent arrival from Virginia, tells her about the Underground Railroad, they decide to take a terrifying risk and escape. Matters do not go as planned and, though they manage to find a station and head north they are being hunt- ed. In Whitehead's ingenious conception, the Underground Railroad is no mere metaphor - engineers and conductors oper- ate a secret network of tracks and tunnels beneath the Southern soil. Cora and Caesar's first stop is South Carolina, in a city that initially seems like a haven - but the city's placid surface masks an insidious scheme designed for its black denizens. Even worse, Ridgeway, the relentless slave catcher, is close on their heels. Forced to flee again, Cora embarks on a har- rowing flight, state by state, seeking true freedom. As Whitehead brilliantly re- creates the unique terrors for black people in the pre-Civil War era, his narrative seamless- ly weaves the saga of America from the brutal importation of Africans to the unfulfilled promises of the present day. The Underground Railroad is at once a kinetic adventure tale of one woman's ferocious will to escape the horrors of bondage and a shattering, pow- erful meditatation on the history we all share. This is a difficult but very important book to read. As Publisher’s Weekly reports: “the story is literature at its finest and history at its most barbaric. Would that this novel were required reading for every American citizen.” Holiday Family Fun Don’t miss your opportunity to decorate a gingerbread house during this year’s Holiday Family Fun event, this Saturday., Dec. 10th, from 10 am to 1 pm, in the library’s Bromley Room.
