Over the weekend, the Viking
wrestling team took to the mats at the
23-team Perry Burlison Wrestling
Classic at Cascade High School in
Turner, Ore. Siuslaw’s Ricky Huff had
the Viks’ highest individual finish,
placing second in the 120-pound divi-
sion after going 3-1.
Huff won major decisions over
Robert Watkins of Sweet Home (12-4),
nents by fall (in 55 seconds and 1
minute, respectively), before losing to
Cascade’s Seth Everetts in the quarter-
finals. Lane took down Zachary
Milstead in 1:48 in consolation but lost
to Ashton Adams of South Salem, 10-
1.
Marshfield dominated the tourna-
ment, scoring 183 points for the team
title, followed by Sweet Home in sec-
ond place with 157.5 points.
Siuslaw finished 13th overall with
57 points, 21 of which came from the
efforts of Huff.
Lady Viking Eyza Abbas competed
in a girls-only tournament, where she
placed second at 126 pounds, defeating
a wrestler who had beaten her last sea-
son en route to the finals.
“She has shown a lot of improve-
ment,” said Viking coach Neil
Wartnik.
The Vikings will return to the mats
this weekend for the two-day North
Bend Coast Classic, Dec, 9 and 10.

Siuslaw coach Dylan Perry
called Friday “a tough loss”
to Elmira, due in large part to
poor freethrow shooting and
turnovers in the fourth peri-
od.
“We started out strong but
lost control of the game,”
said Perry. “I saw glimpses of
some really great things in
the first quarter and again in
the fourth.
“We just need to put
together a full game, not just
great quarters.”
The Viks went 11 for 29
from the charity line —
points that would likely have
made the difference.
“It’s all a learning process.
Basketball requires a lot of
experience to be good,” said
Perry. “It can be tough at the
beginning of a season, but

It was the third quarter that made the
difference for the Falcons Friday night,
when Siuslaw hosted Elmira to a hard-
fought game that was tied at 17-17
entering the half.
After opening with a halfcourt man-
to-man defense in the first half, the
Falcons switched between a 3/4-court
press and 1-2-1-1 zone which, coupled
with early foul trouble for the Viks,
stymied Siuslaw in the third period.
“We scratched our heads for a while
before figuring out how to adjust,” said
Siuslaw coach Clint Tatum, whose
team got behind by as many as 17
E LMIRA
points in the quarter. “Once we figured
it out, we made up a lot of ground.”
Starting defenders Brittany Long
and Destinie Tatum were out for most
of the third quarter as the Falcons went
on a 23-3 run.

Both Mapleton basketball teams
were on the hardwood at the two-day
Yoncalla Invitational last weekend,
with the Sailors coming up short in
both of their matchups.
“We were very competitive with
Lowell all night,” Mapleton boys
coach Will Crook said of the tourney
opener, where the Sailors stayed with
10 points all the way through the start
of the fourth period. “But turnovers
