SIUSLAW NEWS SCHOOL NEWSLETTER ❚ NOVEMBER 2016 ❚ 3 Siuslaw M EANDERING STREAM iuslaw Middle School’s seventh-grade STREAM Team went on several field trips this fall. Oct. 20 “We got drenched this day up on the North Fork of the Siuslaw at Huntington’s Tree Farm,” teacher Susan Hawke said. Over 100 students and 20 vol- unteers put on the Forest Field S Days that encourages students to investigate the land ownership values and issues of local forests and how to find out more about forests, land uses and the inhab- itants. “The seventh-graders learned about forestry and current landowner practices for our local forests from many local and regional people,” Hawke said. Oct. 26 STREAM Team took a field trip to PAWN Trail for compar- ison of old growth forests to clear cutting/managed forests and to learn about invasive species versus native species. Students reviewed the newest rendition of the PAWN Trail map and guide. STREAM Team also took a field trip to Port of Siuslaw in Florence for water quality sam- pling of the Siuslaw River and usability of the MATE ROV (Marine Advanced Technology Education- Remote Operated Vehicle) in the river, funded by the Ocean Guardian School Grant. With this grant, stu- dents are educated with hands-on learning about their environment and how it affects the watershed around us. Hawke said, “I have writ- ten and been granted an Ocean Guardian Classroom Grant, for the purpose of increasing water quality awareness in our area with the use of our Robotics MATE ROV.” Upcoming Dec. 3 In December, LEGO Robotics students are participat- ing in the First Lego League Challenge in Corvallis, Ore. Abby is a sen- ior at Siuslaw High School, and is enrolled in the Advanced Pottery course with Mrs. Kim Pickell. Abby describes the atmosphere of the art room as, “energetic and happy all the time.” Abby is the daughter of Jim and Diane Watkins, and she also helps with another pottery course as an instructional aid. When asked about her favorite part of the class, she responded, “You get along and make friends with people you never thought you’d be friends with. Everyone helps everyone.” Helping others and learning through that process is a wonderful skill she has acquired while in these classes. Abby describes how Mrs. Pickell always provides a, “visual example, and [she] is always there to help if needed.” Outside of pottery, Abby is a varsity COURTESY PHOTO S PHOTO BY CAROL JOLLEY athlete participating in volleyball, bas- ketball and track. She plans to attend a university to acquire her associates degree, then study chemistry. Becoming a dental hygienist is Abby’s dream. With her background in art, Abby will be able to use her skills to solve problems creatively and effectively. iuslaw choirs at the middle and high school level presented a pro- gram of entertaining songs from “This is Halloween” to “Phantom of the Opera” on Oct. 27. You can find us on Facebook under “Siuslaw Choirs.” — Submitted by Debra Young ASPIRE to help students On Dec. 21 and the third Wednesday of each month at 1 p.m. in the Siuslaw High School ASPIRE center, ASPIRE volunteers meet to get updates and trouble shoot concerns for helping students find and secure funding for Connecting with the community Recipients of 2015-16 The Siuslaw High School Alternative Education Program has been requested by its students to be more involved in the community. The students wanted a chance to help Florence in a way that was achievable in their 50-minute School- Community Connect class, and have found a way to help clean up the areas around the high school that have normally looked a bit in disarray. Their actions have impacted some local neigh- borhoods between 27th Street and 30th Street in helping that area be restored to its natural beauty.
