FEATURED ARTIST AT
FLORENCE — During the month of
November, Backstreet Gallery, 1421 Bay
St., will feature nationally acclaimed artist
and teacher Carole Hillsbery.
Her reception will be held Saturday,
Nov. 12, from 3 to 5 p.m., during the
Second Saturday Gallery Tour.
While living in the dry desserts of
Arizona, Hillsbery was still able to cap-
ture all the colors of the rainbow as
though she brought them from her original
home in Oregon. She then mixes them
with splashes of desert colors that radiate
off her canvasses and watercolor paper
like magic jewels.
She enjoys going back to Arizona for a
bit of that warm sunshine.
While adept at oils and acrylics, most of
her works are her vivid watercolors.
Hillsbery fills a brush loaded with color.
After a few masterful strokes of strategi-
cally placed paint, she brings to life the
people, scenes, animals, buildings or flo-
rals that make up her subject matter.
Her use of plenty of water helps define
her loose signature style as it moves
across the page.
Since she loves nature, you might see
her out with her camera catching enough
pictures to keep her painting for a long
time.

For Hillsbery, teaching is as much fun
as painting. Beside her incredible talent,
she teaches with a cheerful positive vibe
that motivates her students. As much a
part of her teaching is the personal rela-
tionships that she develops in her class-
room.

Hillsbery has won numerous awards for
her outstanding work and is a Signature
Artist in several National Art Societies,
which meant multiple submissions juried
in for each award.
Her Signature Memberships are
Transparent Watercolor Society, Western
Federation of Watercolor Societies, and
Arizona Watercolor Society.
In the 2014 Watercolor Society of
Oregon’s traveling show Carole took a
fourth place. She is also a Signature
Member of Northwest Watercolor Society
(NWS).

Local author, syndicated columnist’s latest offering is for writers
In his 16 years as a writer, journalist
and syndicated columnist, Siuslaw News
editor Ned Hickson has garnered multiple
awards in all three writing genres from the
Oregon
Newspaper
Publishers
Association (ONPA) and Society of
Professional Journalists (SPJ).
As a blogger, he has been “Freshly
Pressed” by Wordpress three times and
has more than 8,000 followers.
In his latest book, “Pearls of Writing
Wisdom: From 16 shucking years as a
columnist,” Hickson has created a writer’s
survival guide, offering insights, tips and

inspiration gathered through personal
experience.
“Writers are just like painters or sculp-
tors; they have at their disposal tools to
help them create and communicate in
ways which — depending on how they
use their tools and in what sequence —

Hickson says in his book. “Establishing
that voice not only takes understanding
the tools you have and becoming profi-
cient with them, but also being able to
wield them with confidence.

Hickson says many of the writing
insights he shares in his book are things he
wishes someone had told him sooner,
while others are the result of trial and
error — and a few are simple truths that
helped me keep perspective through all
these years as a writer.”

In his weekly, nationally syndicated
humor column, Hickson writes about
daily life and important social issues, such
as glow-in-the-dark mice, injuries caused
by overheated pickles in fast food and
raising teenagers. His first book, “Humor
at the Speed of Life,” (Port Hole
Publishing, 2013) is a collection of his
columns over the last 16 years.
