This is one of my favorite courses because of the different terrain and being a figure-eight. After you make one loop, you know what to anticipate,” Tatum said. North Bend won the team title with 34 points, followed by Siuslaw with 41 points. South Umpqua was third (49), followed by Brookings in fourth place with 86 points. With its second-place finish, the Viking girls have earned a trip to state, where they are the defending state champions. A repeat isn’t out of the cards but will take as strong an effort as Thursday, when several of Viking runners on both teams were still recovering from an illness that spread through the school last weekend. “I was in Boise,” said Mans. “When I came back on Monday, I wondered where everyone was at. “About 100 students were out sick.” Among them were boys team members Isaac Griffes and Jack Pickell, who were still recovering from the after effects of high fevers Thursday. As late as Wednesday, Griffes was still carrying a 102- degree fever. Normally at the front of Siuslaw’s pack with Pickell, Griffes was fourth on Thursday and 14th overall, with Pickell coming in fourth place with a PR time of 17:11. The fourth place finish earned Pickell a solo trip to the state meet Nov. 5, with the Vikings being nudged out of a team appearance by Marshfield, 50-53. Like the girls team, the Viking boys set a number of personal bests Thursday. Freshman Kiger Johnson ran 17:32 for ninth place, followed by freshman Jonah Jarman in 14th (18:00) and senior Ryan Alletson in 15th (18:12). All were personal records. Griffes finished in 18:09. North Bend won the team title (34), followed by Marshfield (50, Siuslaw (53), South Umpqua (82), Brookings-Harbor (99) and Douglas (140). The 4A state meet will be held Saturday, Nov. 5, at Lane Community College in Eugene.
