Holdover trout will be available in most lakes through the summer. Fishing for the various warm water fish species is good this time of year. There are numerous lakes in the Florence area that can provide good opportu- nity. Trolling herring in the lower bay is an effective technique. Eggs and bob- ber can be productive in the upper bay and river as the season progresses. For cutthroat trout, cast- ing small spinners, spoons or fly fishing streamers or dry flies can be very effec- tive. Angling for all species in streams above tidewater is open. Eggs and bob- ber can be productive in See FISHING 5B Vikings host state volleyball Saturday B Y N ED H ICKSON Siuslaw News After defeating Douglas to nearly two weeks ago to emerge as the far West;s No. 1 seed heading to the 4A state playoffs, the Viking volleyball team will return to the court on Saturday as the second round of state competition gets underway. As the top seed, Siuslaw earned a bye during the first round, as well as the chance to host the Cowapa League’s third-place team, the Tillamook Cheesemakers, which swept Stayton in three sets on Tuesday for a trip to Glenn Butler Court. Siuslaw, currently ranked No. 8 in the 4A, would more than likely face See Oct. 31 11:39am / 6.5 5:28am / 1.0 6:09pm/ 0.9 Nov. 1 12:03am/ 5.7 12:12pm/ 6.6 6:08am/ 1.2 6:48pm/ 0.5 STATE 2B Siuslaw Volleyball Club tryouts to begin in November The Siuslaw Volleyball Club has set its dates for tryouts, which will be Monday, Nov. 7, and Tuesday, Nov. 8, for girls ages 9 to 14. Tryouts for girls age 15 to 18 will be Tuesday, Nov. 14. All tryouts will take place at Siuslaw Middle School from 6:30 to around 8 p.m. The club is entering its 14th season and is open to all girls, ages 9 to 18, who are looking to learn and improve there volleyball game while being part of a team. Participants will practice two to three times per week from mid November through April. Through the generosity of Siuslaw School District, the club uses the Siuslaw Middle School to practice in. Teams play in one to two tourna- ments per month, competing against teams from all over Oregon and Southern Washington. Tournaments are usually one-day tournaments on a weekend, starting at 8 a.m. and continuing into the early evening. Each team plays an average of five matches per day during tournaments. Athletes, coaches and families have come to embrace these times, have fun while learning.
