6 A SIUSLAW NEWS ❚ WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 19, 2016 Library Tidings News about the Siuslaw Public Library Library Tidings, a regular feature of the Siuslaw News, features news about upcoming Siuslaw Public Library pro- grams for adults and children, new books and videos, and other library news of interest to the community. Library Tidings by Kevin Mittge The Hidden Letters of Velta B. By Gina Ochsner Book Review In The Hidden Letters of Velta B. by Gina Ochsner, Maris is summoned to his mother’s bed- side as she nears the end of her life and young Maris must hear a new version — his mother’s ver- sion — of his own story. Maris was born knowing things: his very large, very spe- cial ears enable him to hear the secrets of the dead, as well as the memories that haunt his Latvian hometown. Then, as a boy, Maris found himself heir to an odd assortment of hidden letters; letters from which he would weave a story that could finally expose – and maybe even patch – the holes in the fabric of his family and their town. Gina Ochsner is an Oregon writer, living in Keizer. She has been long-listed for the Orange Prize for her novel The Russian Dreambook of Color and Flight. In The Hidden Letters, Ochsner creates an intimate, hopeful portrait of a fascinating town in all its complications and charm. From the onset of World War II through the cold shock of independence, we see how, despite years of distrust, a com- munity can come through love and loss to the joy of understand- ing. Urban Storytellers Performance Portland Story Theater will be performing their Urban Tellers program on Saturday, Oct. 22, at 7 p.m., in the library’s Bromley Room. Urban Tellers is a part of the phenomenon that has been seen all around the country: real, true stories told on stage in front of a live audience. For more than 12 years, Portland Story Theater has been leading the way to create a unique fusion of wit and bare- bone emotion expressed on stage — and now they’re bringing it to Florence. These touring story shows are filled with personal stories and bring the culture of community to life. Space is intimate and relaxed with just the story teller and you. Portland Story Theater was founded by Lawrence Howard and Lynne Duddy, and they will be joined by Beth Rogers, Penny Walter and Howard Bulick. Lutherans serve community supper Community Suppers are being held each Wednesday from 5 to 7 p.m. on a trial basis at different local churches through Dec. 14. New Life Lutheran is the host for October. Come join community members at dinner tonight. Other churches will host in November and December. Each host is responsible for cooking the food brought on Wednesdays. Beverages are provided. If there is enough partici- pation and interest, the sup- pers could continue in 2017. Come to have food and fel- lowship with other area churches. For more information, call 431-997-8113.
