6 A SIUSLAW NEWS ❚ WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 12, 2016 Interact Club gets bottle filler fountains installed Calling all artists for After a year of fund raising and coordination, the Siuslaw Interact Club completed a com- munity service project that would benefit its peers and SHS students for years to come. In Spring of 2015, Claire Waggoner had researched the impact of plastic water bottles on the earth for a biology proj- ect and found that one of the best options to save thousands of bottles from reaching land- fills is with bottle filler foun- tains. The following September, she approached the Siuslaw Interact Club about installing a bottle filler fountain in the high school mall. In addition to the ecological benefits, it would improve hygiene and increase water intake. This became one of Interact’s community serv- ice projects for the year and it took a year to complete. School administration was the first to be consulted about the project. It was requested that another fountain for the gym be included in the project. The total budget for this project would be more than $5,800. This required putting togeth- er a community partnership from nonprofit organizations, local business owners and the Siuslaw School District. Waggoner applied for a Western Lane Community Foundation Community Grant. The project was awarded a generous $1,400 grant, which solidified the project. Interact Club had raised the $500 through its fundraisers. The Siuslaw Athletic Booster Club also saw the value of this project and donat- ed another $500. The final piece was private businesses. Derrick VanDuch of West Lane Plumbing and Curt Falkoski, who owns CFE Electric, donated their time, services and expertise to install both bottle fillers. This was a significant sav- ings and the fountains were operational by the start of the 2016-17 school year. Waggoner and the Interact Club members will get to bene- fit from these fountains also. “The community effort and generosity to get this done was incredible,” said Waggoner. VOICE YOUR OPINION!
