SIUSLAW NEWS ❚ SATURDAY, OCTOBER 8, 2016 3 B Siuslaw National Forest to allow debris burning CORVALLIS — Cooler, damp weather is allowing fire- fighters in the Siuslaw National Forest to begin burn- ing debris and piles of limbs that have accumulated throughout the year from tim- ber sales and land manage- ment activities. Starting as early as Oct. 4 and continuing throughout the fall, trained firefighting per- sonnel will ignite the pile fires during wet weather and moni- tor them to ensure fires do no spread outside the immediate vicinity. “Because piles can be ignit- ed during wet conditions, burning them is one of our most effective ways to remove non-merchantable wood debris before it can become a hazardous fuel in the dry sum- mer months,” said Nanci Curtis, zone fire management officer for the Siuslaw National Forest. Pile burning operations are planned on both Hebo and Central Coast ranger districts, as well as the Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area, over the next two months as conditions allow. Members of the public may encounter smoke associated with these burns. If unsure whether smoke or a fire is from a planned pile burn, citizens can contact their local fire department or the Coastal Valley Interagency Communication Center at 541- 750-7024 for more informa- tion. The sweep of the Pirates over the next two sets underscored the Viks’ defeat of Marshfield the previous Saturday, when the two teams faced off during the North Marion Fall Classic. With starters Elyssa Rose, Makenzie York and Waggoner out of the lineup that day, Siuslaw managed to battle back from a 2-0 deficit to sweep the In Honor of All Veterans next three sets and win the match at the tournament. In Tuesday night’s match, Rose made her presence known with 7 kills, and 6 blocks. York had 4 kills and 3 aces, along with 5 kills from junior Emma Collins and 4 aces from sophomore Jordan Long. Thursday night, Siuslaw had no trouble caging the winless Bruins (0-8) at Brooking-Harbor, taking the match in three sets, 25- 15, 25-21, 25-18. The win keeps the Vikings poised in first place with a record of 7-1 (10-6 overall) as they head into the final week of league competition against league con- tenders Douglas and North Bend. A win Tuesday at Douglas would clinch the Far West League title, leaving Siuslaw to host the Bulldogs on Thursday in a rematch against the only team to hand Siuslaw a league loss this season. First serve for both matches goes up at 6:30 p.m. Sailors and 11 attacks. Wells had 9 attacks and 3 kills, with West landing an ace, 2 attacks and 1 kill. Johnston had 4 attacks and 1 ace for the Sailors. “We’ve definitely had to face some challenges, but the girls keep trying their best and keep working through them,” said Mapleton coach Jesika Crook. Tuesday, the Lady Sailors will wrap up the Mountain West League season at home against Alsea. Match time is set for 6 p.m. from 1B sets to secure their fourth league win of the season. Sophomores Alyssa West, Haley Wells and Baileigh Johnston, along with senior Josi Hays and Dana Halverson, com- bined forces to take the third match, 25-19, then dominated the final set, 25-13.
