SIUSLAW NEWS ❚ WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 28, 2016 Hundreds attend Aging In Place symposium Fall apples to benefit local teens at Twin Lakes Store The Twin Lakes Store has once again begun fundraising for its annual Teen Giving Tree and is asking the commu- nity for donations of produce and fruit. One hundred percent of the proceeds are used to buy Christmas presents for the teens in the north lakes neigh- borhood. “Gleaning the local gardens is a wonderful way to raise money for our teens,” said Vicki Ambrosio, owner of Twin Lakes Store. “Plus the customers benefit from fresh, local produce at a fair price.” Tomatoes, tomatillos, beans, zucchini, apples and more have been available from 3 A time to time. However, apples — including Asian apples — are all that is currently avail- able. “So if you have an abun- dance of fruit or vegetables, please consider donating for this fundraiser,” said Ambrosio. Twin Lakes Store is located three miles North of Florence on Highway 101, near Sutton Lake. In addition to 30 exhibitors providing information and resources to help older adults maintain an independent lifestyle while living at home, presentations were made on six topics including wellness, safety and emergency, home repair assistance, basic estate planning, fraud and theft prevention, volunteering and employment opportunities. “FACC’s motivation in organizing this event was to educate and provide information and resources so our community members can devel- op personal and collective plans of action to address the needs of our aging citizens,” FACC board member Suzanne Mann-Heintz said. Since April, when Eco went on display in front of the Florence branch of the library, it has generated lots of atten- tion, many special visits and countless photos with visitors and residents alike. “Eco is a fantastic interac- tive learning opportunity,” said Library Director Meg Spencer. “We can take chil- dren to see the art and ask: How many fish can you find on Eco? or Which ecosystems are depicted on Eco?” “Eco and the Ecosystems of Oregon” was created by Siuslaw High School student and regular library patron Ben Cahoon. Eco is part of a pub- lic art project, Dancing with Sea Lions, which commemo- rates the Florence Events Center’s 20th Anniversary and celebrates the ripple effect of the arts in the community.
