It didn’t take much time for the
Sailors to get a handle on the
Wolverines during last Friday’s home-
coming football game at Mapleton
High School.
About one quarter to be exact.
Leading 32-8 heading into the sec-
ond period, Mapleton made it clear that
it had every intention of securing a win
during one of the biggest nights of the
year.
Less than two minutes into the quar-
ter, Hunter Simington emerged from
the quarterback pocket and scampered
43 yards into the end zone. A conver-
sion by senior tight end Nick Smith
made it 40-8.

A combination of injuries that left
key players out of position and a hard-
hitting Douglas team lead to Siuslaw
losing its league opener at Winston last
Friday night, where the Vikings experi-
enced a rare shutout, 53-0.
That same night, South Umpqua
squashed Marshfield, 42-20, and North
Bend, who the Vikings host this Friday,
hammered Brookings-Harbor 49-7.
Over the course of the next few
weeks, Siuslaw will face three of the
4A’s top-10 ranked teams as they try to
reach the road to a post-season appear-
ance.
“We didn’t play up to our potential,
but we’ll be all right,” said coach Jamin
Pool.
Against the Trojans, Siuslaw was
