For a limited time, tickets for the mainstage musical are available for $2 off the regular price. People who buy their tickets through Friday, Oct. 7, will only pay $18 to see this hilarious show. The creative team that brought “Les Misérables” to local audiences has gathered a stellar cast of new and old faces to bring Gilbert and Sullivan’s classic comic opera of a band of pirates, faithful daughters and a very modern major general in a comedy of epic proportions. “Pirates of Penzance” is a hilarious farce of sentimental pirates, bumbling policemen, dim-witted young lovers and an eccentric major-general The story concerns Frederic, who, having completed his 21st year, is released from his TO OPEN From its beginning 36 years ago, SEAcoast has been bringing top quality perform- ers to audiences in Florence — and this season is no dif- ferent. “This upcoming season continues that tradition,” said Linda Gargis, SEA board vice-president. “We have seven fantastic shows, includ- ing midweek concerts, plus a new ‘Dinner and a Show’ package available for season ticket holders.” The season opens Wednesday, Oct. 5, at 7 p.m., with Cantus, one of the pre- mier vocal groups in the United States. This all-male ensemble will highlight the camaraderie, bonding and honor of the Armed Forces. SEA will partner with local veterans groups to help set the tone for Veterans Day. Cantus is a full-time, pro- fessional vocal chamber ensemble, made up of nine men singing in a tenor, tenor, baritone, bass (TTBB) changed male voice arrange- ment. The artists are self-led, with programming and musi- cal direction coming from within the group itself, mak- ing each performance unique and exciting for audiences. The ensemble is known for apprenticeship to a band of tender-hearted pirates. He meets Mabel, the daughter of Major-General Stanley, and the two young people fall instantly in love. However, Frederic learns he only has a birthday each leap year, and that he must serve for another 63 years. Bound by his own sense of duty, Frederic’s only solace is that Mabel agrees to wait for him faithful- ly. Filled with boisterous songs, glib lines and an all-star cast, this production is not a show to be missed. Last Resort Players will play “Pirates of Penzance” at Florence Events Center, 715 Quince St., the weekends of Nov. 4 to 6 and 11 to 13, with 7 p.m. evening and 2 p.m. matinee performances. Speaker Wave music video to premier at City Lights On Thursday, Sept. 29, Florence-based band Speaker Wave will screen its first orig- inal music video live on City Lights Cinemas’ Chaplin Stage. Doors open at 7:15 p.m., and the show is from 7:30 to 10 p.m. The event will include live music performances by Speaker Wave and new Florence-based band Good Problems. This release brings Speaker Wave’s original song, “Leavin’ Town,” featured on its debut album “Tsunami Evacuation Route,” to the big screen. The song brought the band local fame as a semi- finalist pick in the Eugene Weekly’s “Next Big Thing” song competition, earning them an invitation to play Lane County Fair and a spot on the Next Big Thing compi- lation CD. “Leavin’ Town” exhibits an acoustic, slightly folk-rock side of Speaker Wave. Folk melodies, traditional folk instruments and elements of alternative rock mingle, fusing together to create an emotional indie folk-rock ballad. The band includes Kevin Wolpoff, Jeremy Hendricks and Vince Hendricks-Davis. Steven Ingham will be on guest fiddle and Teresa Mihm will be on guest flute. The band contacted direc- tor and editor Dan Haberly with a proposed music video project, with “Leavin’ Town” being the likely candidate. Haberly, having shot still photography for the band in the past, was intrigued by the prospect of a video collabora- tion. Shooting commenced and, with much local support, the video was completed.
