SIUSLAW NEWS ❚ SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 24, 2016 SHIBA to offer Medicare enrollment information Are you ready for Medicare’s next window for open enrollment? Every year from Oct. 15 through Dec. 7, people with Medicare have the opportu- nity to change their health and drug plans. Companies that offer Medicare programs make changes in rates, co-pays, deductibles, drug lists and provisions each year. Consumers should receive information about the 2017 plans by Oct. 1, in time to review them before open enrollment ends. Local SHIBA (Senior Health Insurance Benefits Assistance) counselors are gearing up for appointments to be held most Fridays dur- ing Open Enrollment in the computer lab at the Florence campus of Lane Community College. SHIBA counselors meet with individuals to personal- ly assist with Medicare choices, problems, enroll- ments and questions. As trained volunteers serving under the direction of the Center for Medicare Services, they offer free, unbiased advice and servic- es. Largest crowd yet for SHS all-class reunion When you graduate from high school, the last thing on your mind is a class reunion, let alone a 70-year class reunion. At the Siuslaw Alumni Association (SAA) All-Class Reunion banquet held Saturday, Sept. 10, at Three Rivers Casino Resort, members of the Class of 1946 mingled with the two SAA scholarship recipients from the Class of 2016, Hannah Bartlett and Mikaela Siegel. Celebrating landmark reunions were the Class of 1971 with around 40 members, and the Class of 1966, which celebrated its 50th reunion. Other special guests includ- ed two members of the Class of 1943, Neva Severy Levinson and Ellen Spencer Zimmerman, and Klaus Ortwein, the German foreign exchange student from the Class of 1966. All told, 300 class members attended the dinner. Bartlett and Siegel were this year’s scholarship recipients, thanks to donations from Siuslaw alumni and the pro- ceeds from the banquet raffle.
