Volunteers sought for PeaceHealth Peace Harbor services The Peace Health Peace Harbor Volunteers (PHV) are looking for new members who want a meaningful, fulfilling volunteer experience. Volunteers provide a multi- tude of services to PeaceHealth Peace Harbor Medical Center. In the month of July, more than 2,109 hours of volunteer time was provided to staff and patients locally. In 2015, more than 20,000 hours were given by volunteers. However, more volunteer help is always needed. PHV works in nearly every area of the hospital. Visitors can see the La Poloma golf cart transporting documents around the hospital campus daily. The service in invaluable to the hospital. Volunteers also work in the visiting physician clinics, hos- pice, same day surgery, the hos- pital gift shop, hospital lobby and other areas on the campus. For those who enjoy crafts, the Tuesday Workshop makes projects for the gift shop and hospital, as well as baby blan- kets and Healing Blankets for patients. Whatever your area of inter- est, there is a gratifying volun- teer experience waiting for you. Consider volunteering for this vital organization. PHV will be holding its annual mandatory training/ in-service meetings on Sept. 15, and Oct. 20, at 11:30 a.m., at the Florence Events Center, 715 Quince St. Lunch is provided and flu shots will be available to vol- unteers only. Volunteers must attend one of these meetings. To RSVP for this meeting or for more information on volun- teer opportunities, call Rosalie Johnson at 541-902-1368 or Monica Kosman at 541-903- 8308. PTA holds Every Student Succeeds Act community forum The public is invited to a community forum hosted by the Florence Community PTA and sponsored by Oregon State PTA, covering the topic of ESSA (Every Student Succeeds Act). This relatively new legisla- tion, signed into law on Dec. 10, 2015, reforms the 50- year-old ESEA (Elementary and Secondary Education Act) and replaces the No Child Left Behind Act of 2002. ESSA focuses on a goal of preparing all students throughout K-12 grades for success in college and careers. What does ESSA mean in Oregon? The forum will focus on this question, with an emphasis on assessments. Focus will be on how ESSA is to be implemented in Oregon, and what it means for local school districts. Speakers include represen- tatives from the Oregon Department of Education, the Oregon Education Association and Oregon PTA’s President, Collin Robinson. A panel discussion is planned, with time for ques- tions from attendees. Local PTA unit leaders from around the region will be attending a leadership training during the morning hours that day, including a networking lunch at noon. Afternoon forum attendees are welcome to attend the lunch as well. Anyone interested in edu- cation in Oregon will want to attend: teachers, school administrators and staff, par- ents and community mem- bers. The event will be held at Siuslaw Middle School, 2525 Oak St., on Saturday, Sept. 17, from 1 to 3 p.m. For more information, con- tact Florence PTA representa- tive and Oregon PTA Region 6 director Diane McCalmont at 541-999-9692.
