R ev up for the ninth annual Rods ’n’ Rhodies Invitational Car Show in Florence, Friday to Sunday, Sept. 9 to 11, featuring high-end hot rods and custom cruisers from 1976 and earlier. Each year, Historic Old Town comes alive with the sights and sounds of more than 100 of America’s best rods and cruisers, music, fun, raffles and games. On Saturday, the annual exhibition of awesome autos takes place from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Bay Street in Historic Old Town, as the visiting vehicles line up for their free dis- play to the public. These beauties will include high-end custom hot rods, muscle cars and restored classics. Saturday’s show is fol- lowed by the traditional cruise through Old Town, beginning at 4 p.m., to the sounds of ’50s and ’60s music and the roar and rumble of dozens of classic rides. Also, be sure to watch the young hot-rodders race their creations in their own competition during the Pinewood Derby on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the corner of Bay and Nopal streets. On Sunday, the outstanding automo- biles return to Bay Street from 9 a.m. to noon, when Best of Show as well as Merchant Awards will be presented to the lucky auto owners. Multiple award-winning Faith Granger wrote, produced, directed and provided music for the 2011 film about a girl, a 1932 roadster and a mysterious letter. Viewers are promised fast hotrods, cool cats, gravity defy- ing swing dancing and rocking retro music in the film. The hunt for treasure begins Friday, Sept. 9, and runs through Sunday, Sept. 11. More than 60 loca- tions throughout the city and surrounding communities, as well as many business partici- pants in Old Town and the Antique District on Highway 101, are listed in the directory map (see pages 2-3). There are treasures aplenty out there just waiting to be found! If you’re a seasoned garage- saler, you probably don’t need help. But if this is all new to you, here are a few hints to help make the day extra fun. 1. Pick an area or neighbor- hood to start in, then use a highlighter to help map out your “plan of attack.” You’ve got a lot of ground to cover today — stay organized! 2. Pack some extra boxes, sacks and/or packing paper in your car. It’s always a big disap- pointment to get home with a fragile find and discover that it’s been broken in transport because it wasn’t carefully wrapped. 3. Bring plenty of change and small bills. You are going to need them! 4. Take snacks and beverages along to keep you fortified. This garage-sale stuff is serious business and takes a lot of energy. 5. Be friendly. Have fun. Don’t be afraid to negotiate, but hag- gle fairly. Keep it fun!
