2 B SIUSLAW NEWS ❚ WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 7, 2016 Coast Guard offering free safety checks R EGISTER FOR ANNUAL The Coast Guard Auxiliary recommends a vessel safety check (VSC) for everyone, even experi- enced boaters. This Saturday, Sept. 10, auxiliary members will be offering VSCs for recre- ational boaters at Siuslaw Marina and RV in Cushman, from 10 a.m. to noon. The exam only takes about 15 minutes and poten- tially reduces boating risks for owners and passengers. Participants will be asked questions about their boat and safety equipment will be checked. Vessels which pass the safety check will be awarded a U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary decal that informs boating agencys that the vessel is in compliance with boating equipment laws for the year. There is no charge for this service and no penalty for those that don’t pass the DEBORAH HELDT CORDONE PHOTO safety check. P REFONTAINE R UN Applications are now being accepted for the 2016 Prefontaine Memorial Run. The 10,000-meter road run is slated for 10 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 17, in downtown Coos Bay. The run is held in con- junction with the Bay Area Fun Festival, Coos Bay’s largest annual community cel- ebration. Now in its 37th year, the popular run got its start when a group of Coos Bay citizens decided it was time that Steve Prefontaine’s hometown did something to honor its favorite son. For the past 26 years, there has been a high school cross- country team competition as part of the Pre Run. The high school team competition will start at 9:45 a.m. The entry fee is $30 if made prior to Sept. 14, and $40 thereafter. High School team competitors must register on athletic.net and receive a dis- counted registration fee. All race entrants will receive a T-shirt specially designed to commemorate the run. Awards will be given in five-year age groups. First- through third-place finishers in each division will receive awards. Additionally, a tro- phy will be presented to the top finishers in the men’s and women’s open and wheelchair divisions.
