2 B SIUSLAW NEWS ❚ WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 31, 2016 Next Gemwalker jaunt set for Sept. 6 in Florence Join the Yachats Coastal Gems for the Three Lakes Year- round Event in Florence on Tuesday, Sept. 6. Walkers will meet at the Commons in Yachats at 9 a.m. if they want to carpool to Florence, or meet at The Sportsman, 249 Highway 101 in Florence, at 9:45 a.m. to reg- ister. This 10K route includes a variety of environments and walking surfaces. This walk is basically flat ground with some uneven surfaces and is not appropriate for wheelchairs or strollers. September is usually the best weather of the year on the Oregon Coast, but no guaran- tees. Come prepared for what- ever the weatherman delivers. As always, leashed pets are welcome on walks, but be sure to bring water and clean up materials for pets. A sturdy 6- foot leash (non-retractable) is required. On Wednesday, Sept. 7, The Gems will hold its monthly meeting along with a potluck dinner at the picnic shelter behind the Commons in Yachats. VICTORIES FOR VETERANS Special Olympics team seeks bowlers Special Olympics Florence is looking for interested bowlers for the bowling sea- son, which began this week at Holiday Bowl. Practices are Tuesdays, from 4 to 6 p.m., through October, followed by a regional compe- tition in Bend in November. Anyone who has been iden- tified as having an intellectual (or cognitive) disability by a medical professional is eligible to be involved in Special Olympics. Athletes must be at least 8 years old to compete in regional competitions. Athletes may participate in practices at age 6. There is no upper age limit. There is no cost to join Special Olympics, nor is there a cost to train or compete. Special Olympics raises funds through sponsorships, private donations and special events.
