Cat Deuter to be featured artist at FEC
The Florence Events Center
(FEC) Gallery Committee, as
part of Friends of the FEC,
will feature award-winning
guest artist Cat Deuter in
Gallery One during the month
of September.
Deuter’s

expertise in graphite pencil,
colored pencils, oils, and pas-

Deuter became interested in
the Native American People
through the photographic
works of Edward Curtis.
After leaving California in
1977, Deuter settled in Rapid
City, S.D., which brought her
in touch with local Pow Wows
in South Dakota and Montana,
as well as ranching events,
rodeos and state fairs. She is
self-taught, and uses her own
photographs for reference
material.
Deuter’s artworks have
been published in magazines,
a children’s book and they
featured in the revised edition
of
the
book,
“The
Encyclopedia of Colored
Pencil Drawing.”

living
in
Southwestern Colorado for
eight years, Deuter moved to
Florence to be close to the
ocean, and to enjoy the many
outdoor activities available
year-round. She is a member
of Florence Regional Arts
Alliance (FRAA), 121 Maple
St., where several of her art
pieces are on display.

world that I love, and share it
with others,” said Deuter.

Cindy Haberman, Mary Dimon and Julie Brown, the new administrative team under
Siuslaw Valley and Western Lane’s Intergovernmental Agreement (IGA), met togeth-
er to build their teamwork and create a program to help the community. The women
decided to gather donations of money from the two agencies, friends and members
of Florence Elks Lodge No. 1858 to buy school supplies and first-aid equipment for
students at Mapleton Elementary School. They gathered every supply on the back-
to-school list — enough for 31 students to have a Siuslaw Valley backpack filled to
the brim. A box of extra supplies will go to Siuslaw Elementary School. “We wanted
to do something as a group and give back,” said Brown.
