hand personal observations
extending over his own 25-year
friendship with Phillips.
Phillips recorded what some,
including author Guralnick, con-
siders the first rock and roll
record, “Rocket 88” by Jackie
Brenston and his Delta Cats, a
band led by Ike Turner, who also
wrote the song.
From 1950 to 1954, Phillips
recorded Howlin’ Wolf, whom he
considered his greatest discovery,
Elvis Presley, his second, as well
as James Cotton, Rufus Thomas,
Rosco Gordon, B.B. King,
Charlie Rich, Junior Parker, Roy
Orbison, Carl Perkins and many
more.

Sam Phillips: The Man
Who Invented Rock ’n’ Roll
By Peter Guralnick
Book review by Kevin Mittge
In January 1950, Sam Phillips
opened Sun Studio, originally
called Memphis Recording
Service, in Memphis, Tenn. An
Alabama native, Phillips had
been a disc jockey and radio
engineer for a local station in
Muscle Shoals before moving to
Memphis.
Music
historian
Peter
Guralnick has now written an
intensely interesting and enter-
taining biography of Sam Phillips
and his impact on rock and roll
music.
Entitled “Sam Phillips: The
Man Who Invented Rock ’n’
Roll,” the subtitle continues
“How One Man Discovered
Howlin’ Wolf, Ike Turner, Jerry
Lee Lewis, Johnny Cash and
Elvis Presley, and How His Tiny
Label, Sun Records of Memphis,
Revolutionized the World!”
That subtitle captures the
nature of this wonderful book.
Guralnick, who has written
extensively on American music
and musicians, including a two-
volume biography of Elvis
Presley, tells Phillips’ amazing
story loaded with detail from
extensive interviews and first-
New materials
The library has several “new”
materials shelves. We separate
out new adult fiction and nonfic-
tion, new large print, new DVDs,
new audiobooks, new young
adult and new juvenile fiction.
The length of time items stay
on the new shelves depend on
various factors, including shelf
space to move them off the new
shelf as well as the need to make
room for more new items.
5 A
A six-or nine-month stay on
any “new” shelf is about average.
Keep in mind that not all “new”
items will be on the new shelf.
We try to select the most popular
and most diverse new titles for
your browsing pleasure.
Study rooms
Did you know that the library
has two small study rooms that
comfortably seat about four or
five people, that can be used for
small meetings, private study,
one-on-one tutoring or as a quiet
place to use one’s laptop?
The rooms may be scheduled
up to four hours and are available
on a first-come, first-served
basis; the rules of use are other-
wise the same as for the larger
conference room and Bromley
Room.
Please note that one of the
rooms is equipped with a white-
board, and both rooms are
equipped with a dictionary, the-
saurus and MLA handbook.
