SIUSLAW NEWS ❚ WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 24, 2016 This year’s Community- Wide Garage Sale is Sept. 9 through 11. Now in its fourth year, this annual event attracts garage sale aficionados and yard sale addicts from all over the Willamette Valley to the Florence area for a weekend of browsing and bargain-hunting worthy of an episode of “American Pickers.” The sponsors for this three- day event, the Florence Area Chamber of Commerce and Siuslaw News, have made it easy to participate and insure that each sale is a success. For $20, each garage sale will receive a classified ad in the Siuslaw News and featured placement on the official Community-Wide Garage Sale map, which will be published in the Sept. 7 and 10 editions of the newspaper. In addition, the event will be promoted on Craigslist and social media sites. Participants will also receive two official Community-Wide Garage Sale signs and a tip- sheet full of handy hints on how to have a successful sale. Sign-up forms are available for pick-up at the Visitor’s Information Center, the Siuslaw News or online at www.florencechamber.com/wp -content/uploads/2016/07/ Garage-Sale-Poster-R.pdf. Local estate liquidator and garage sale guru Cindy Wobbe is this year’s committee chair and offers these helpful sugges- tions when planning your sale. 1. Make sure your merchan- dise is clean before you price it. Dust, dirt and greasy grime are turn-offs to would-be buyers. 2. Put price tags on every- thing. Make sure your price tags are on the top, not the bot- tom, of an item and that they’re easy to read. If you don’t have time to price everything indi- vidually, signs are helpful such as “all paperbacks 25 cents each” or “all clothing $1 each.” You can also offer a package deal (i.e. “paperbacks 25 cents each or 5 for $1). Buyers will appreciate your efforts and you’ll sell more merchandise. 3. Price to sell. You may very well have spent $50 on that toaster 10 years ago, but you haven’t used it in eight, and its taking up room in your cup- boards. Make the price attrac- tive to your buyers and every- body wins. 4. Before putting out cloth- ing, especially jackets and coats, check the pocket for cash, credit cards and other long-forgotten items. You might be surprised at what you find. 5. Have plenty of change on hand, including small bills and coins. Also, stock up on shop- ping bags and newspaper to wrap breakable items. 6. Make sure you use good signage to help buyers find your sale. Small signs with lit- tle letters just don’t cut it. Keep the information simple and straight to the point: address, days and time of sale, and an arrow pointing in the right direction in large, easy to read letters will do the trick. After your signs are up, drive past and see if you can read them easily, because if you can’t, neither can anyone else. When your sale is over, don’t forget to take down your signs. On the subject of signs, Wobbe adds, “Please remember that posting signs on utility poles, street or signal light poles and median strips is in violation of Florence City Code.” She also recommends using wooden stakes or plastic or metal sign holders to hold your signs. Deadline for signup and inclusion in this year’s Community-Wide Garage is Tuesday, Aug. 30, at 5 p.m. Deadlines for press releases are Mondays and Thursdays by noon.
