SIUSLAW NEWS ❚ SATURDAY, AUGUST 13, 2016 River Gallery features Durmaj, Schwartz art The River Gallery will be featuring two local artists dur- ing the Second Saturday Gallery Tour today, Aug. 13, from 3 to 5 p.m. Kitty Durmaj is a local jew- elry artist who divides her time between Portland and Florence, where she creates her fascinating pieces in her home studios. Her jewelry reflects her love for working with metal and wire. Her ability to repur- pose vintage findings in her designs results in a blend of the past and present. Durmaj’s work takes you on adventures to distant places and times, especially France. Thoughts and feeling are inter- woven into her designs through words and phrases echoed from the past and whispered into the present. Michael Schwartz creates beautiful pit-fired ceramics. He covers some areas with copper or steel mesh and various other inter- esting items. He then buries the pots in a sawdust pit, sets it ablaze and leaves them to smolder overnight, as was (and still is) done by Indians in the American Southwest. The result is due to the interaction of fire and some on salts and metals. No glaze has been used. Each piece is a one-of-a- kind work of art with blacks, grays, greens and reds. The River Gallery features the work of more than 20 local artists and carries a wide selection of hand-blown Oregon glass floats. The gallery, located in Old Town Florence, is on the cor- ner of Bay and Laurel streets. Stop by during the Second Saturday Gallery Tour between 3 and 5 p.m. and meet the artists and enjoy cham- pagne and chocolate.
