SIUSLAW NEWS ❚ WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 10, 2016 Authors, publishers to converge for book fair The annual Florence Festival of Books, a book fair for authors and publishers, will take place Saturday, Sept. 24, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., with preliminary events on Friday to complement the book festival. The event is hosted by the Friends of the Florence Events Center and the festival planning committee. Now in its sixth year, the book fair continues to be a pop- ular gathering for authors, pub- lishers and potential future authors. The public is invited to this free event to meet the authors and have their books signed. Nearly 20 of the authors in attendance will be local resi- dents. The book fair will feature at least six publishers. In addition, writers are invited to bring their manuscripts for a chance to meet with publishers represent- ing many genres: fiction, non- fiction, memoir, children’s liter- ature, fantasy, mystery, young adult, poetry and more. Library Tidings On Friday, Sept. 23, at 3 p.m., a panel of authors will speak on the topic “My first book: the process of idea to print.” Different authors will discuss their unique journey of the first book and how it made its way to a printed publication. The event will take place at the Florence Events Center the- ater and is free to attend. At 7 p.m. that evening, sus- pense thriller author Phillip Margolin will be the featured keynote speaker for the festival. Margolin has written 19 nov- els, many of them New York Times bestsellers, including the recent “Woman with a Gun,” “Worthy Brown’s Daughter,” “Sleight of Hand” and the “Washington Trilogy.” Tickets are $8 in advance or $10 at the door for the conver- sation with Phillip Margolin. Registration for authors and publishers for the Florence Festival of Books is now open online at www.florencefestival ofbooks.org. Library Tidings by Kevin Mittge By Colum McCann Book review by Kevin Mittge Colum McCann is an inter- nationally renowned author of novels and short stories. Some of his well-known novels include “TransAtlantic,” “Zoli,” “Dancer,” “Songdogs” and his National Book Award- winning “Let the Great World Spin.” “Thirteen Ways of Looking” is McCann’s first book of short stories in a decade and doesn’t disappoint his readers. In 2004, McCann was attacked and knocked uncon- scious on the streets of New Haven, Conn. He had started writing these stories prior to that incident, but it affected him and impacted how the sto- ries were ultimately devel- oped. The New York Times stated that the stories “…are connect- ed by a tension, an unease, a threat, a sense that things are off kilter but perhaps can be put right if the characters, and the reader, understand them more fully.” The title story, a novella, is about a retired judge, reflect- ing on his life’s work, unaware that this will be the final day of his life. In “Sh’khol” a mother spending Christmas alone with her son confronts the unthink- able when he disappears while swimming off the coast near their home in Ireland. In “Treaty,” an elderly nun catches a snippet of a news report in which it is revealed that the man who once kid- napped and brutalized her is alive, masquerading as an agent of peace. And finally, in “What Time Is It Now, Where You Are?” a writer constructs a story about a Marine in Afghanistan call- ing home on New Year’s Eve. Called mesmerizing by some, deeply personal and subtly subversive by others, and at times harrowing and funny, “Thirteen Ways of Looking” demonstrates McCann’s standing as one of this country’s greatest contem- porary writers. Wireless available Don’t forget that both the main Florence library as well as the Mapleton branch library have wireless Internet access. If you have family visiting the area and they want to bring their laptops, they can access all their favorite sites and check their email with the wireless network. The library has numerous places where the laptops can be plugged in and reception is excellent in most parts of the library. No login is required and access is free. The only limi- tation is that you cannot print from the wireless laptops. Mapleton has a nice counter patrons can sit at with their laptops, with convenient elec- trical outlets, and a wonderful view of the passing Siuslaw River. Florence Democrats gather to meet local candidates The Florence Area Democratic Club held its annu- al picnic Aug. 7 at Honeyman State Park. The well-attended event fea- tured speeches from U.S. Sen. Ron Wyden; Labor Commissioner Brad Avakian, a candidate for Oregon Secretary of State; state Sen. Arnie Roblan; state Rep. Caddy McKeown; Lane County Justice of the Peace Rick Brissenden; and Florence City Councilor Ron Preisler. A sumptuous potluck, great music and a raffle rounded out the program as the candidates took a number of questions from the enthusiastic crowd. —Submitted by Mark Brennan Summer is Here!
