SIUSLAW NEWS ❚ SATURDAY, AUGUST 6, 2016 11 A KXCR to host Robert Military Museum unveils new Iraq display Sabado at KB Gallery Local nonprofit public radio station KXCR will present saxophone talent Robert Sabado on Saturday, Aug. 20, at Kenneth B. Gallery, 1458 First St. in Old Town Florence, beginning at 6:30 p.m. His highly regarded record- ings prompted jazz legend and early mentor, Stan Getz, to describe Sabado as “... the best tone around.” These days, Sabado has been fusing downtempo elec- tronica grooves with live saxo- phone improvisation. Playing with this genre allows melodic lines to flow out of Sabado’s horn and mind. This presentation of his music has proved to have been a real treat for the audience. “I have been around the world and I believe my music COURTESY PHOTO Robert Sabado can take the listener to exotic lands,” said Sabado. KXCR is proud to present the rising star in the smooth jazz world. Come for an evening of great music, good food, and a no-host bar. At the anniversary celebra- tion held July 2, the Oregon Coast Military Museum unveiled its latest diorama, which depicts a U.S. military convoy traveling through a typ- ical Iraqi village during Desert Storm, built in 1:72 scale. It is full of amazing detail depicting life in that middle- east venue complete with structures, villagers, convoy vehicles and even extreme detail down to laundry hang- ing on the line and fruit and vegetables in the farmer’s market. The diorama, about 32 square feet, sits on top of a display of other artifacts of the same period and military dis- cipline. The entire display was a collaboration of effort by Judy Murphy, who built the village itself and was the driving force behind the full-scale dioramas in the museum, Chief of Staff COURTESY PHOTO New diorama depicts a typical Iraqi village Geoffrey Cannon, who con- structed the vehicles, and vol- unteer Dorland Neale, who constructed the display struc- ture itself. The display was funded through a grant from the Western Lane Community Foundation. “The idea of the diorama is to show what a village might look like and demonstrate a convoy passing through. We didn’t base it off of a specific village, so the village doesn’t have a name. We did mostly look at Iraqi villages and towns, so we are saying it is an Iraqi village,” described Cannon. “We started the proj- ect in February and finished it on June 30,” he added. Visitors can view this life- like display by visiting the museum, 2145 Kingwood St., during its open hours, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Thursday through Saturday. Soon she was doing relief work at the front desk of The Old Town Inn, a newly reno- vated motel skyrocketing up the TripAdvisor rankings. In 2014, Young finally con- vinced management at Hoagland Properties, owners of the two inns, to give her life partner, Corduroy Kravitz, a housekeeping position. This month the couple became the new managers at The River House Inn. “We are delighted to announce that Cord and Ashley have earned this new responsi- bility through their hard work and dedication,” said Hoagland Properties president Craig Sanders. “It’s the first time we have been able to promote staff into management from within the company, in part because COURTESY PHOTO New River House Inn innkeepers Ashley Young and Corduroy Kravitz. They invested in us and have entrusted us with a great opportunity.” “The River House Inn is a great property,” added Kravitz. “Wayne and Susan Tripp, who recently retired, were so help- ful during the transition. They helped make this place a TripAdvisor Hall of Fame win- ner by earning the Travelers’ Choice Award five years in a row. We’ve got a high bar of excellence to meet; but we want to take this place from number three in Florence to number one, and that means some friendly competition with our friends at The Old Town Inn.” Kravitz and Young talk enthusiastically about intro- ducing people to Florence and all the fun it has to offer, rec- ommending things to do and see, and which restaurants they think guests will enjoy. “And we will push our high standards for immaculate rooms, and a great guest expe- rience, even higher,” added Kravitz, with Young chiming in, “We have a great staff and relate well to them because we've been doing what they do. “We hold fun competitions with them. We strive for a five- star experience for vacationers and business travelers. “If we find out that a guest is celebrating a birthday or anniversary, we’ll put some balloons in their room before they arrive so they will remem- ber their stay.” AUGUST 22ND 50% off food and 75% off other items Senior discounts / Free estimates (cash only) • No Returns All discounts exclude special orders Also Available computer desk and chair, storage racks, merchandise shelves, lighted glass case 1541 Hwy. 101, Florence 541-902-0900 S IUSLAW N EWS Breaking news, photo galleries and MORE!
