E ight individuals and two teams, spanning nearly 40 years of Siuslaw athletics history, will be inducted into this year’s Siuslaw B Y Athletics Hall of N ED H ICKSON Fame. Siuslaw News The selection process began last September with nominees that had carried over from previous years, along with new nominees submitted by community members. This year’s group is the largest to date, with athletes representing indi- vidual achievement in basketball, foot- ball, wrestling, track and field and cross country — including a member of the very first girls’ track team in 1965, Toni Winthers-Stonelake. Cell: 541.999.0786 See HOF 3B STEP to share essential salmon fishing tips tonight Relying on his vast experience as an angler on the Oregon coast, Ron Caputo, president of the Salmon and Trout Enhancement Program (STEP), will share his 12 tips for a successful salmon season tonight, Aug. 3, at the monthly STEP meeting. The club meets at 7 p.m. at the Elks’ Lodge in Florence, and the public is invited to attend. Caputo will also share his recipe for brining herring as anglers ready for the fall chinook season. Caputo has fished the Siuslaw for many years and will talk about his favorite fishing holes, strategies for when and where to fish, what to do to prepare for the fishing day and other strategies. Prior to his talk, the club will hold a short business meeting with reports from the treasurer, recent work parties, planned work in the fall and current !!! g n i t s i L N ew Lynnette Wikstrom Broker Come the night of Aug. 19, the following athletes will be inducted into Siuslaw’s hallowed Athletics Hall of Fame: Harold McClellan (1958): A three-sport athlete, McClellan was a standout in football, basketball and track, leading Siuslaw on the gridiron as a halfback with touchdown runs of 50 and 44 yards to upset undefeated Toledo in the 1957 playoffs. In basketball and track, McClellan was one of the Vikings’ top scorers his junior and senior years. Les Conley (1965): As a junior in 1964, Conley won the 100-yard dash in a blistering 10.2 seconds, then placed second in the 180-yard low hurdles in 20.2. In 1965, Conley placed second at state in the 100-yard CBC#11319 fishing reports. The STEP group is under the aus- pices of the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife. It is an all-volunteer organization with a mission to return fisheries to his- toric levels through habitat restoration, education programs and a broodstock program for winter steelhead. For more information, contact Caputo at 541-997-4961. SIUSLAW RIVER: Cutthroat For cutthroat trout, cast- ing small spinners, spoons or fly fishing streamers or dry flies can be very effec- tive. Angling for all species in streams above tidewater is restricted to artificial flies and lures until Sept. 1. Casting small spinners, spoons or fly fishing streamers or dry flies can be very effective. ALSEA RIVER: Cutthroat The Alsea River is open for cutthroat trout, casting small spinners, spoons or fly fishing streamers or dry flies can be very effective. Bait is not allowed above the head of tide until Sept. 1. SILETZ RIVER: Steelhead, cutthroat Steelhead fishing is fair. This run typically peaks by early July. Casting spin- ners, drifting bait or using a bobber and jig can be effective. Cover water and fish small and simple as the river conditions are low and clear. For cutthroat trout, casting small spin- ners, spoons or fly fishing streamers or dry flies can be very effective. WILSON RIVER: Steelhead, Chinook, cut- throat Fishing for steelhead and spring Chinook is slow. The water is low and clear, so use lighter gear and target the deeper hold- ing areas. Trout angling should be fair. YAQUINA RIVER: Cutthroat For cutthroat trout cast- ing small spinners, spoons or fly fishing streamers or dry flies can be very effec- tive. Angling for all species in streams above tidewater is restricted to artificial flies and lures until Sept. 1.
