Registration has begun for the newly established Salmon Run 5K, which will take place Saturday, Aug. 27. The run is hosted by the Siuslaw Watershed Council in memory of Shiloh Sundstrom, and will take place in Mapleton at the high school. It will feature both a 5K and a 3K fun run/walk. Runners can register online at www.EclecticEdgeRacing. com by clicking the Salmon Run 5K link. From there, par- ticipants can either print the mail-in registration brochure with payment or follow the instructions for online registra- tion. Come celebrate the life of a beloved Deadwood resident and Mapleton High School graduate who touched the lives of many in the community. Toni Winthers-Stonelake (1965): Reputed to be the rea- son the first Viking girls track team was established because of her athleticism, Winthers scored 26 points to help Siuslaw win the district meet in only its sec- ond year. Her efforts also quali- fied her for state in the 100- dash, long jump and 440-relay. The relay team placed fifth at state after matching the previ- ous year’s (1954) state-winning time (53.8). Dick Pickett (1967): Went to state as a junior wrestler, plac- ing fifth at 130 pounds. He returned as a senior year to win the state title at 141 pounds, giving up only 1 point during the entire tournament — in the championship round, where he won 6-1. Wayne Jackson (1974): Named All-League as a half- back on offense and linebacker on defense in 1972, Jackson went on to score 6 touchdowns in his final game as a senior, accounting for 266 yards on 39 carries. In 1973, who was named to the All-State team. He remains No. 4 on Siuslaw’s list for Most Touchdowns in a Single Season with 20; No. 10 in Career Rushing Yards with 1,977; and No. 16 in Single-Season Rushing Yardage with 1,145. She was also a member of the 1986 basketball team that made the Final 8 her junior year, then went 13-1 the following year, with Wilson averaging 12 points per game. In 1987, she finished second at state in the discus and fifth in the shot put, helping Siuslaw win its sixth consecutive state girls track title. She remains No. 4 on Siuslaw all-time list for both the shot put (39-2) and discus (129- 7) Brent Sanford (1992): As a fullback, Sanford was unstop- pable, racking up 3,032 yards rushing — a number that remains No. 2 in school history for career rushing yards. Sanford holds the school record for Rushing Yards in a Single Game with 315 set in 1990. His record of 16 touch- downs in a single season is still No. 8 on Siuslaw’s all-time list. He is also No. 10 in Single Season Yardage with 1,299 set in 1992. Doug Kelley (1993): Lead the Viking boys golf team to the district title in 1993 after shoot- ing a 78 to tie for second indi- vidually, just 3 strokes behind first place. He went on to share the indi- vidual state title that season, shooting a 72-72—144 to lead the Vikings to the state team title. 1996 Boys XC team: The team of Aaron Long, Woody Scott, Adam Bacon, Justin Mans, David Richmond, Jeff Keck and Daniel Halsey won Siuslaw’s first state cross coun- try title since 1966. The team placed 11th, 18th, 20th, 29th, 55th, 71st and 96th individually, beating out heavily favored teams from St. Helens and Phoenix. The win marked the begin- ning of a cross country legacy for Siuslaw, under the direction of then first-year coach Chris Johnson. 1997 Boys Track team: After capturing its fourth- straight district title that year, the team qualified athletes in 4- out-of-7 field events and 9-out- of-10 running events at state. Team members Adam Hunt (discus), David Richmond (200M, 400M, 4x1 relay, 4x4 relay), Mike Everson (4x1 relay), Jon Jensen (4x1 relay), Matt Pearson (4x1 relay, 4x4 relay), Aaron Long (800M, 1500M, 4x4 relay), Kris Helphinstine (110HH, 300IH), Stewart Myrick (javelin), Tony Reindl (shot put), Brandon Lockman (pole vault), Eric VanCurler (discus), Justin Mans (3000M), Woody Scott (3000M), went on to win Siuslaw’s first boys state track title in nearly 20 years (1979) after tying with La Salle with 52 points. The boys 4x4 relay team of Jensen, Pearson, Long and Richmond still hold the Siuslaw record with their state-title win- ning time of 3:24.25. This year’s Siuslaw Athletics Hall of Fame induction ceremo- ny will be held at Three Rivers Casino Resort, beginning at 5:30 p.m.
