2 B SIUSLAW NEWS ❚ WEDNESDAY, JULY 6, 2016 Oregon Coast Aquarium seeks summer volunteers NEWPORT — Each year, more than 400,000 visitors to Newport make the Oregon Coast Aquarium part of their travel itinerary. Because the facility is so firmly rooted in Newport’s tourism scene, this summer the aquarium is seek- ing concierge volunteers to connect visitors to attractions both inside and outside its grounds. Concierge volunteers (CVs) welcome guests warmly and build rapport by offering “insider tips” and knowledge about the aquarium and its exhibits. Additionally, CVs interact with departing visitors by answering questions, pro- viding information about travel needs such as lodging and eat- ing accommodations, and sug- gesting other local attractions and tourist activities to enjoy. As the busy summer season gets underway, CVs “will play an integral role in ensuring that guests get the most out of their visit to the area,” said Beth Hawkyard, volunteer services manager for the aquarium. New CVs will receive a crash-course training which includes customer service, aquarium facility orientation, overview of special tours, edu- cation programming, commu- nity events and activities, organization partners/affilia- tions and local accommoda- tions. This position is ideal for vol- unteers who wish to enhance visitors’ experience both at the aquarium and in Lincoln County generally by sharing their enthusiasm and knowl- edge of the area. The seasonal position lasts throughout the summer until Labor Day weekend, and con- sists of at least one weekly shift between to 4 hours long. Those interested in becom- ing a concierge volunteer can contact Volunteer Services at 541-867-3474 ext. 5316 or reg- ister online at aquarium.org/ support/volunteer/. The Oregon Coast Aquarium is dedicated to the highest qual- ity aquatic and marine science programs for recreation and education so that the public bet- ter understands, cherishes and conserves the world’s natural marine and coastal resources. Visit at 2820 S.E. Ferry Slip Road, Newport, Ore., and at aquarium.org. ‘Booster Barn Back’ auction, dinner to raise funds for Siuslaw Athletic Boosters The annual Siuslaw Athletic Booster Club auction and din- ner will be a “Booster Barn Bash” on Aug. 20 at the King family barn up the North Fork.
