4 B SIUSLAW NEWS ❚ SATURDAY, JULY 2, 2016 PHOTOS BY NED HICKSON/SIUSLAW NEWS (Clockwise from above): SWC camp participants climb aboard a fishing boat with help from SMS principal Andy Marohl; Kelsie Phillips scoops for macroin- vertebrates to study under her microscope; and campers practice their canoeing technique on Cleawox lake. Water from 1B Thursday’s camp brought together volunteers from STEP, the SWC and Rangers from Honeyman State Park to provide three separate learning stations under the guidance of SWC camp director Elizabeth Manley. “It’s a great opportunity to give kids of all ages a chance to explore the watershed,” says Manley, who explains that the volunteers make it happen. “We couldn’t do it without them and the support of OWEB, WCLF, our partnership with the Siuslaw School District, and through private donations.” During the Intermediate Camp, students in grades 4 through 6 are able to get on the water to learn canoeing skills and also have the chance to fish the lake with STEP volunteers. “Growing up in Bakersfield, I never had access to anything like this,” says Frankhouser. “Being able to provide this kind fo expe- rience for kids this age helps teach them an understanding and respect for nature.” At a microscope, Phillips zooms in on a macroinvertebrate as Ryan Warren, an OSP Ranger 2, explains how to focus the lens to view the tiny organism. “Most people have no idea all of this life is going on around them in the macroscopic world,” says Warren. “Hopefully, kids will leave here with a better understanding of nature and the world around them that most people never notice.” The next camp, Intermediate Camp, will take place July 11 through 14, for students enter- ing grades 6 to 8. The final camp will be July 18 through 22, for students entering grades 8 to 12 with previous watershed experience Participants travel through- out the Siuslaw watershed learning about plants, animals, water and land. Camps focus on the restora- tion work that is being done to keep the watershed healthy. Advanced camp includes Let me Showcase your property.
