Yachats plays ‘Spirit of New Orleans’ Sunday Come on down to Yachats on Sunday afternoon, July 3, for a free outdoor concert with Skip Jones and The Spirit of New Orleans, featuring Paul Biondi on saxophones. The show will be held in the Yachats Commons Picnic Shelter with music played from 1 to 4 p.m. The Spirit of New Orleans lives on with Skip Jones and his band. While Jones is at home on both piano and organ in a number of musical styles, he always returns to his New Orleans roots influences, such as Booker T. and the MGs, Doctor John, James Booker and Professor Longhair. “Our shows are like a blues travelogue, but we always return to New Orleans. New Orleans is our base camp,” Skip Jones Jones said. He has worked with The Coasters, The Drifters, The Platters and Bo Diddley. He toured with Canned Heat in 1985-86 holding down Larry Taylor’s bass position. Biondi fell in love with Florence, Ore., in the early 1990s and now lives in Eugene. He has worked with Frank Sinatra, Mel Torme, Ella Fitzgerald and Ray Charles and has toured with Smokey Robinson and Aretha Franklin. Byron Case is an original member of the 1960’s surf band The Sunrays, whose hit song “I Follow The Sun” — plus other recordings — rode high on the charts. This concert is produced by Polly Plumb Productions, a tax exempt 501(c)3 organization that supports and promotes music and dance performances and art exhibitions in the Yachats area. Other programs include the annual Rainspout Music Festival (rainspout.org), the March Ocean Artistry Art Quilt Show and the popular annual Yachats Celtic Music Festival from Nov. 11 to 13. There were tasty barbecue hamburgers and hot dogs, salads, watermelon and strawberry short cake to wrap it up. Cowboy Bill Olson put on a great show with amazing music and had the audience singing and laughing throughout the show. A beautiful picnic basket was raffled off to Bud Salzer, and prizes were given out for best-dressed cowboy and cowgirl, which went to guest Jayden Welker and resident Edna Noyes, respectively.
