Siuslaw Viewfinders announce March contest winners Photos by Siuslaw Viewfinders members (from left) Cathy Wasson, Jane Pittenger and Mary Nulty FLORENCE — The theme for the March meeting of the Siuslaw Viewfinders Camera Club was “Rain or Foul Weather,” and there was a large vari- ety if images. First place went to Cathy Wasson with a photo of the big storm that hit Shore Acres this year. She rendered it in black and white, which made it dramatic. Jane Pittenger took second place with a striking photo of a storm on the big island of Hawaii taken from a helicopter, where she caught a rainbow. Third place went to Mary Nulty, who submitted her photo of a rain storm caught from the side. This was the last meeting before the summer break. Regular meetings of the SVC will resume Sept. 12. ‘Based on a True Story’ returns Blues master Walker T Ryan to perform benefit concert FLORENCE — “Based on a True Story” (“BOATS”) is the Last Resort Players upcoming show set for June 17 and 18 at the Florence Events Center. First presented two seasons ago, “BOATS” proved extremely popular with audiences, who enjoyed listening to true stories (or slightly embellished) that were also poignant, laugh-out-loud-funny, provocative and, in some cases, life changing. The storytellers are your local friends, relatives, teachers, city councilors, pas- tors and restaurant servers. It’s a lineup not to be missed. Between stories, Debra Young, musi- cian and vocal teacher at Siuslaw High School and Middle School, will provide brief piano interludes as transitions. She previously performed with LRP in the onstage band for “Chicago” last season. At the “BOATS” performance, picture taking is encouraged, not prohibited. Informality and good stories are the theme of the evening. This flat floor pro- duction has table seating with food and drinks available for purchase. The program begins at 7 p.m. on Friday, June 17, and Saturday, June 18. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. Tickets are $15 at the FEC box office, 715 Quince St., or online at eventcenter.org. Florence Municipal Airport Saturday, July 2nd 10am-3pm TROPHIES WILL BE AWARDED AT 3PM SUGGESTED DONATION: $2.00 PER CAR LOAD Proceeds benefi t the Siuslaw High School Wrestling Team FLORENCE — Blues master Walker T Ryan will perform at a fundraising event Saturday, June 4, for community radio station KXCR 90.7 FM. “Walker T is the real deal. A bluesman, a Delta bluesman,” says Ken Babbs, orig- inal Merry Prankster. It’s an assessment that is shared by the audience members who attended his last Florence appearance in 2013. “One of the most memorable musical performances I’ve experienced in the Bromley Room,” said Stu Henderson. “Walker T blew us away. KXCR just had to get him back.” This time, the venue has changed. Ryan will perform at the Kenneth B Gallery in Old Town, but the excitement remains. “Not only do we get to hear a reprise of the songs and stories of Walker T’s long hardworking musical career, KXCR, in addition, will be offering a food and bev- erage spread and silent auction bargains to help our volunteer powered station,” says Henderson. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. Walker T Ryan There is a $10 cover charge. A silent auction will be held from 7 to 8 p.m., with the performance running from 8 to 11 p.m. All are welcome to attend this Saturday night blues benefit to support local com- munity radio, KXCR 90.7 FM.
