Funds will not be awarded to individuals or for operat- ing expenses. Grant applications can be obtained at the Mapleton Post Office, Mapleton Public Library or by calling Kathy West at 541-268- 4665. Application deadline is May 11. 240 HOURS Siuslaw Friendship Club names new officers Recently, the Siuslaw Friendship Club announced its new officers during its April luncheon. New offciers include: Treasurer Dee Darrow, secre- tary Jeanette Bratcher, vice president Pam Thompson, president Janet Van Kleek and consultant Judy Sause. The club meets on the sec- ond Thursday of the month, September through June, for lunch and a general meeting at Driftwood Shores at 11 a.m. The primary goal of the club is raising funds to support Florence charities such as Food Share, SOS, Florence Area Humane Society, Helping hands and Habitat for Humanity. Bark for Life of Florence kicked off its third year with a campaign through booster.com selling its purple tie-dyed T- shirts, which supporters are wearing around town now. Loyal owners and dogs will walk next to the float to show their support for the main event June 11 at Miller Park. Friends and their canine fami- ly members are encouraged to participate. Join or leave the parade anywhere along the route. Local DJ, “magic man” Al Rojas, will rock the bystanders with great dance and shout music. This year, many new Bark FOR for Life events have been added for dogs and their “uprights,” including games, contests and barnyard agility. Surf City dog trainer Dina Pavlis and her great team have added some simple dog trick introductions and a special demonstration in nose work, which teaches dogs to recog- nize certain scents. There will be other demonstrations, inter- esting acts on stage and a fundraising silent auction as well. Contests will include best dog/owner look-a-likes, best costume, best trick and more. All are welcome to come and join the events for a few hours of fun with their beloved canine member.
