‘Sea Life’ themed art exhibit continues through May in Galleries One and Five While the FEC’s “Dancing Sea Lions” have migrated to their new temporary homes in Florence and beyond, the Sea Life exhibit will stay at the Florence Events Center in Galleries One and Five through May. The collection of stunning paintings, photography and sculptures are on display and available for purchase. Art medias include oil painting, watercolor, acrylic, colored pencil and mixed media represented by artists Ron Hildenbrand, Kat Cunningham, John Leasure, Dan Leasure, Katie Miller, Paul Kingsbury, Eileen Hearne, Tracy Webster, Colleen Goodwin Chronister, and Claudia Ignatieff. Photographers displaying their works are Kevin Liebel, Michael MacDuffee and Bob MacDuffee. In addition, the glass-case exhibit is fi lled with myrtle wood sculptures by artist Terry Woodall. The spring concert, titled “Irving Berlin Meets Uncle Sam,” will include a number of patriotic songs as well as old favorites that people enjoy singing or humming along with. Irving Berlin wrote hundreds of songs, many becoming major hits, which made him a “legend” before he turned 30. During his 60-year career, Berlin wrote an estimated 1,500 songs, including the scores for 19 Broadway shows and 18 Hollywood fi lms, with his songs nominated eight times for Academy Awards. The concert will be held Sunday, May 1, beginning at 2 p.m. at the Florence Events Center. Tickets are $10 for adults, with attendees age 18 and younger admitted free. In addition, new Community Chorus of Florence director Jennifer Weier will make her debut during the spring concert. Having moved to Florence in December of 2015, Weier quickly became emeshed in the local music scene. In addition to directing the Chorus, Weier, an accomplished pianist, also provides accompaniment for local church choirs and the Flotones. A publication of the Siuslaw News. Since beginning her piano studies at age 4, Weier progressed to the point of graduating with a piano performance degree from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. She has performed internationally and is planning to complete a master’s degree in piano performance in Germany at some time in the future. Despite her busy volunteer and conducting schedule, Weier tries to practice piano for fi ve hours a day. She manages to fi t in hobbies such as hiking, running and cooking.
