MID COAST LAKES
Rainbow trout stocking
is underway in many loca-
tions along the mid coast.
Look at the stocking report
to see the full stocking sea-
son.
Fishing for the various
warm water fish species
tends to be slower during
the winter month but can
pick up quickly as spring
nears and fish move to the
shallows for spawning.
There are numerous lakes
in the Florence area that
can provide good opportu-
nity and have both boat
and bank access.

It was a big day for the Vikings
Tuesday as they completed a three-
game season sweep of the Pirates at
Marshfield in a 15-10 romp.
It was also a big day for senior Scott
Gordon, who was as effective from the
mound as he was at the plate, picking
up the win as the starting pitcher and
also getting onboard during all six of

his at bats.
In a game that saw a total of 25 runs,
Siuslaw scored in six out of seven
innings.
Still, Viking fans were never able to
breath easily until the top of the sev-
enth inning. Until then, it looked to be
anyone’s game, with the Pirates mov-
ing ahead 3-2 heading into the top of
the second inning.
With the combined efforts of Caleb
Paredes and Gordon, who scored three
times each, and two trips across the
plate each for Kenneth Thrall, Michael
Mason and Brogan Cornish, the

Vikings were able to battle back in a
game that saw five lead changes, nine
unearned runs and eight batters hit by
a pitch.
A total of eight Vikings scored in
Tuesday’s game, including Thrall, who
went 3-for-6, and Gordon, who had
three walks, a pair of singles and a
fielder’s choice.
The win tied Siuslaw with Douglas
for fourth place in the Far West, keep-
ing the Viks’ hopes alive for a playoff
bid. Meanwhile, South Umpqua fell to
North Bend, dropping the Lancers into
a tie for second place with Brookings.
SALMON RIVER:
Mapleton’s Tyler Packebush placed
second in the 110-meter hurdles with
a time of 18.75 in Monroe.
Competing against 1A teams from
Eddyville, Lowell and Triangle Lake, as well
as 2A teams from East Linn Christian,
Monroe and Yoncalla, Mapleton’s AJ Foster,
Hunter Simington, Tyler Packebush and
Evan Moso combined forces for both relay
events for first place in both races.
In the 4x100-meter relay, Foster ran the
first split, followed by Simington, Packebush
and Moso anchoring the final leg for a win-
ning time of 46.24.
Foster also kicked off the first leg of the

In a tight matchup between the
Vikings and Pirates in a game that was
waiting to be broken open, that break
didn’t come until the top of the sev-
enth inning. At that point, the Lady
Vikings were only down by three runs
when the Pirates came to the plate to
start the top of the final inning.
By the time they handed the bats
back over the Siuslaw, the Pirates
handed brought home 11 runs for a 15-
1 lead.
Though Siuslaw had nine hits
against Marshfield’s junior pitcher
Mackenzie Johnson, it wasn’t enough
to rebound from the Pirates’ late-game
rally.
Siuslaw shortstop Anna Petras went
2-for-4 with a triple, first baseman
Claire Waggoner was 2-for-3 with one
run scored, pitcher Heidi Jones was 2-
for-4 with two stolen bases and a trip
across the plate, and Anna Stonelake
went 2-for-3.
The Viks will be on the road at
Douglas Tuesday, beginning at 5 p.m.
