4 B SIUSLAW NEWS ❚ SATURDAY, APRIL 23, 2016 On the Bite A WEEKLY FISHING REPORT FOR THE LOCAL REGION www.dfw.state.or.us/RR MID COAST LAKES: Rainbow trout stocking is underway in many loca- tions along the mid coast. Look at the stocking report to see the full stocking sea- son. Fishing for the various warm water fish species tends to be slower during the winter month but can pick up quickly as spring nears and fish move to the shallows for spawning. There are numerous lakes in the Florence area that can provide good opportu- nity and have both boat and bank access. SIUSLAW RIVER: The river basin is closed to all fishing above the head of tide and will reopen for cutthroat trout fishing on May 22. ALSEA RIVER: Steelhead Winter steelhead fishing is slow. This time of year does tend to be dominated by more wild fish and post spawn run backs. Casting spinners / spoons, floating bait or a jig, or bouncing bottom with an egg pattern are good options. The banner (far left) still hangs in Dodson’s office. Dodson from 1B Dodson. “Now, I can honestly say I have no idea.” According to Dodson, the plan has been in the works for a while. But until all the official retire- ment paperwork had cleared and everything was in place, he want- ed to avoid saying anything. “You just never know how things will play out, and I didn’t want to be the guy who says he’s leaving then there I am again in the fall. “But once the paperwork cleared, there was no turning back.” The opening for the head foot- ball coach position also became official this week, with a search continuing until the position is filled. So far, Dodson, 52, said he hasn’t been a part of that process. “I’m not really sure what, if any, role I’ll play in that deci- sion,” he said. In the meantime, Dodson said it’ll be business as usual until his final contract day June 30. “No one I know has ever said, ‘I sure wish I’d worked another few years,” Dodson says. “I’m blessed to have had the opportu- nity to be the head coach and work with such amazing staff and kids over the years. Being able to retire while I’m able to enjoy it and make the most of that oppor- tunity is also a blessing. “In a way, I’m not ready for it, but it’s time.” (Editor’s note: Look for a full feature on Tim Dodson’s career in next Saturday’s sports section.)
