B Y N ED H ICKSON B ASEBALL AND S OFTBALL FWL LEAVES HELM OF S iuslaw football coach Tim Dodson hasn’t been fall fishing or teed off at the golf course on a late September afternoon in nearly 30 years. Come this fall, he’ll do both. Earlier this week, rumors that Dodson was hanging up his coach’s whistle before next football season went from speculation to signed paperwork as he submitted his retire- ment papers for final approval as his wife, educator and assistant track coach Mary Dodson, sat next to him. “It was like signing a letter of intent,” Dodson said with a laugh while in his office Thursday. “It was a milestone for sure.” In this case, Dodson’s intent is to shift gears from being one of Siuslaw’s longest-running and most successful coaches, to being able to do the things his dedication to football has forced him to sideline for so many years. “If you asked any time during the last 20 years what I’d be doing August 25th, I could tell you,” said See DODSON 4B NED HICKSON/SIUSLAW NEWS April 25 HOSTS CYAN MAGENTA YELLOW BLACK • SHS BASEBALL S. Not just because it would be the final home meet of the season, but also because of several standout performances and multiple wins for both the boys and girls teams. For the boys, A.J. Foster, Trevver D’Auteuil, Tanner Wilson, Cole Spencer and Dominic Wells each had individual wins, along with a team win in the 4x400-meter relay for Evan Moso, Foster, Wells and Spencer. Foster outpaced three Crow runners to win the 100-meter dash in 12.22. In the discus, D’Auteuil threw 100 feet, 1 inch for first place, with Zac Croson placing second at 60 feet, 11 inches. D’Auteuil also finished second in the 3,000-meter race in 16:01.46, while Wells ran the 1,500-meter race in 5:02.68 for second place. Wilson threw the javelin 126 feet, 10 inches to win the event, with Croson placing fourth at 79 feet. Wells and Spencer tied for first place with equal leaps of 5 feet, 2 inches. In the 400 meters, the Sailors had two top-five finishes, with Spencer in second place (1:00.37) and Moso in fifth (1:02.90). For the girls, Hannah Rodet and Clarissa Triebskorn had wins in the 100-meter hurdles and 300-meter hur- dles, respectively, with times of 22.02 and 1:04.87. The Lady Sailors had a near sweep in the shot put, lead by Haley Wells, who landed first at 31 feet, 4 inches. Josi Hays threw 29 feet, 9 inches for second, followed by Erin Michael in fourth place (25 feet, 1 inch) and Brittany Wilson in sixth place (22 feet). See TRACK 4B Vikings narrowly nipped by Bulldogs, 3-2 B Y N ED H ICKSON Siuslaw News The Vikings may have lost Tuesday’s match up with the league’s No. 1 team from North Bend, but it wasn’t by much. In fact, the Vikings literally had a chance to blow the game wide open in both the sixth and seventh innings with the bases loaded. Instead, the Vikings went down swinging, with Bulldogs lefty Tyler Laskey fanning 15 Siuslaw batters in the game. Laskey allowed only four hits to help North Bend edge out the Vikings on a narrow 3-2 win. After trailing 3-0 and leaving the bases loaded in the bottom of the sixth, the Vikings scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh when senior short stop Kenneth Thrall, with two outs, drove in two runs on an error. Down 3-2 with runners at the cor- ners, the Vikings left them there as North Bend slipped away with the win. Siuslaw had other opportunities to score earlier in the game, with Jared Brandt pulling off a textbook sacrifice bunt, and singles from Michael Mason, Evan Teter and Scott Gordon. Viking freshman pitcher Gabe Simington confers with senior catcher Michael Mason. On the mound, Mapleton fresh- man lefthander Gabe Simington threw all seven innings and struck out seven Bulldogs, allowing only one earned run. Yesterday’s scheduled double- header against South Umpqua was canceled due to field condi- tions. Barring weather, it will be made up Monday, beginning at 3 p.m. NED HICKSON/SIUSLAW NEWS
