ATHLETE OF THE WEEK NED HICKSON/SIUSLAW NEWS Siuslaw senior Taylor Dotson is safe at third base after hitting a 1-RBI triple against Brookings on Saturday. Dotson was 3-for-3 at the plate. Softball Taylor Dotson Siusla w H.S . Softball The Viking senior went three-for-three at the plate with a triple; picked up two RBI and scored three times in Siuslaw’s Far West League victory over the Brookings- Harbor Bruins. from 1B “Not exactly ideal, but it was what it was,” said O’Mara. “We just went to work trying to get those runs back.” And that’s exactly what the Viks did. “We didn’t let it worry us,” said senior shortstop Anna Petras.” The Vikings answered by going through their entire batting rotation in the bottom of the inning, scoring five runs to cut their deficit to 6-5. After holding the Bruins scoreless in the top of the second inning, Siuslaw took an 8-6 lead after seven straight at bats. However, Brookings battled back in the third fourth innings, holding the Viks away from the plate while tagging five runs for an 11-8 lead heading into the bot- tom of the fourth. That’s when senior Taylor Dotson smacked an RBI triple that ended in a long, headfirst slide into third base that brought the dugout to its feet. “Taylor’s not really known for …GRAND OPENING... Visit us here at Boat-land! her speed, so to see her hustle like that and slide headfirst to beat the tag was something that got every- one fired up,” said O’Mara. In the next inning, senior cen- terfielder Anna Stonelake sprint- ed her way to a crucial catch that ended the inning and the Bruins’ threat, keeping Siuslaw within one run, 11-10. Moving into the bottom of the inning, junior first baseman Claire Waggoner doubled to score the tying run, then made her way home for the go-ahead run on a single from junior catcher Nikki Launius. From there, the Vikings secured the win in the top of the seventh off the glove of Petras, who snagged a hot grounder and relayed it to Waggoner at first base for the final out — and the win, 12-11. Dotson was 3-for-3, with 3 runs scored and 2 RBIs. Jones, Petras and Waggoner each had a double, with Jones claiming a game-high 3 runs for the Viks; Petras and Waggoner scored 2 runs each against Brookings. From the pitcher’s circle, Jones struck out five and walked three, throwing a total of 307 pitches between Friday’s double- header loss against Douglas and Saturday’s win. “It was a good win for us,” said O’Mara, whose team will be on the road at South Umpqua Friday for a doubleheader against the Lancers. “As long as we beat the teams we should and sneak a win or two on the road, we still have a decent shot at making the playoffs.” Friday’s doubleheader at South Umpqua begins at 3 p.m. Honorable Mention Michael Mason Fri. 4/22-Sat 4/23 10am-4pm 86244 Xylo St. From Florence take hwy 126, turn left on Xylo (just before the Casino turnoff) at top of hill keep right, last house on Xylo.
