4 B SIUSLAW NEWS ❚ WEDNESDAY, APRIL 6, 2016 THESIUSLAWNEWS . COM ❘ / SIUSLAWNEWS ❘ @ SIUSLAWNEWS Community News Casino, B&G Club plant pinwheels Prescription drop box reopens at Florence Justice Center The City of Florence is pleased to announce that the prescription drug drop box is once again available at the Florence Justice Center. The prescription drug disposal drop box will be available to the public Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., in the lobby of the Florence Justice Center, at 900 Greenwood St. This is a great way to safely dispose of your outdated or unused prescription and over the counter medications. Due to the construction of our box, and its relatively small size, do not package any containers together in boxes or bags. The box does not accept any liquid medications or sharps (used needles or lances). The city hopes this conven- ient disposal option can help keep area families safe and the waterways clean in Florence. This box is intended for use by the public, it is not intended for usage by commercial facil- ities. If you have any questions or concerns, contact the Florence Police Department at 541-997- 3515. Florence community invited to write Haiku The Florence Regional Arts Alliance (FRAA) Poetry Committee is celebrating April as National Poetry month, with an invitation to the Florence Community to write a haiku poem. A haiku is an unrhymed three-line poem, based on a tra- ditional Japanese poetic form. Though there are different ways to write haiku, the tradi- tional pattern in English is to write the first and last lines with five syllables each, and the middle line with seven syl- lables. For example: “The river runs through, Birds and sea lions share the space With boats at the dock.” The subject matter for the haiku is a celebration of Florence — the river, ocean, dunes, places or the people. All haiku poems need to be emailed to Bettieandkiki@ yahoo.com (put Haiku in sub- ject line) or turned into the FRAA Art Center, 120 Maple St. in Old Town, by Friday, April 15, at 5 p.m. Include your name, phone number, email and age if you are under 18. The best of the poems will be added to mixed media pieces and hung around town until May 7, when they will be brought to the Florence Events Center to decorate for the Spoken Word Poetry Contests which take place that day. The youth contest for any- one 18 and under takes place at 2 p.m., with free admission for anyone in the audience. The main Spoken Word Poetry Contest starts at 6 p.m. with a $10 admission fee. Spoken word artists from around the state will be gather- ing in Florence to compete for the largest cash prizes offered for poetry. First place will receive $500, second place wins $250, and third place will receive $100.
