At 51-feet-2.5-inches, the Viking junior is just a little more than 10 inch- es away from breaking the 1972 record Siuslaw sophomore thrower Trent Reavis is closing in on a new school record in the shot put with his latest winning mark at 51-2.5. See VIKINGS 3B NED HICKSON/SIUSLAW NEWS Siuslaw sweeps Junction City in doubleheader B Y N ED H ICKSON Siuslaw News Saturday was a big day for the Siuslaw baseball team, with the Vikings completing an impressive sweep of Junction City in the Tiger’s den. On the mound for Siuslaw was Mapleton freshman Gabe Simington, who struck out 10 and allowed only four hits in six innings as the Vikings opened the doubleheader with a 12-2 win. Thursday, Siuslaw will wrap up non- league play by hosting Pleasant Hill at 4:30 p.m., then open the Far West sea- son Friday in a doubleheader at home against Marshfield, beginning at 3 p.m. Effective ways of catching surf perch on the Oregon coast will be the highlight of tonight’s meeting of the Salmon Trout Enhancement Program (STEP) group. The group meets at the Elks Lodge on 12th Street beginning at 7 p.m. The public is invited to attend. Bill Mumpower, a long- time area resident and veter- an angler, will share tips for catching the tasty ocean perch. Mumpower will talk about safety, types of bait to use and how to set up a rod. He will also share some of the prime spots to go to fish for the surf perch and how to read the waters for the best places to cast. There will be time for questions and answers and opportunities to examine the rod setups he brings to the meeting. Prior to his talk, there will be a short business meeting. Included in the meeting will be an update on the hatchery operations, the upcoming schedule at the Whittaker Trap in preparation for release of the steelhead smolt and fishing reports. The annual fundraiser, which culminates with a donation ticket drawing on Memorial Day, is kicking off with members picking up their raffle tickets to sell to family, friends and neigh- bors.
