At right: BM2 Surfman Eisbrenner performs final Surfman qualification exercises last week on a 47-foot Motor Life Boat at the Siuslaw River bar. n the bright, peaceful morning of March 30, U.S. Coast Guard Surfmen from all along the Oregon coast converged on Coast Guard Station Siuslaw River to welcome one of the service’s newest Surfmen to the ranks. It was on this day that Boatswain’s Mate Second Class Klaus Eisbrenner received his certificate chroni- cling him as Surfman No. 512 in the Coast Guard’s register of Surfmen. He was pinned as a 47-foot Motor Lifeboat Surfman before his shipmates, peers and family. Coast Guard Surfmen are the O service’s most highly trained boat handlers. They are part of a long tradition of lifesavers, dating back almost 200 years, responsible for some of the Coast Guard’s greatest rescues. Operating rescue boats in surf and heavy breaking seas remains one of the most chal- lenging and dangerous tasks Coast Guard boat crews per- form. The Surfman qualification process is long and extremely demanding. Only 5 percent of Coast Guard boat operators ever obtain qualification as Surfmen. There are 20 designated surf stations in the Coast Guard and approximately 250 members who currently hold qualifica- tion as a Surfman. The greatest concentration of surf stations is along the treacherous Oregon coast, a stretch of coastline many Surfmen call home. Klaus Eisbrenner, a Coast Guard member for almost 11 years, has been training at Station Siuslaw River for his qualification for the past four years. He recently returned from four weeks of concentrat- ed training at the National Motor Lifeboat School in Illwaco, Wash., where they built upon his previous training and experience to refine his skills as an operator. LCC seeks Siuslaw leadership class volunteers wants paper donations The English Language Learners program at Lane Community College (LCC) Florence Center is in need of volunteers on Wednesday or Thursday morning, from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m., to lead a small group in English conversa- tion. For more information, contact LCC Florence Center at 541-997-8444. The Siuslaw High School Leadership Class is holding a paper drive next week for donations of copy and printer paper. This will help the stu- dents free up some of their budget dollars and put the money toward other areas. This is an easy way for the community to help. Copy paper, printer paper, ruled paper — if it’s 8.5 x 11 inches and you can write on it, the class can use it. If you or your business would like to participate in the drive, bring in a ream or more of paper to the Siuslaw News, 148 Maple St., Monday through Friday, April 4 to 8, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Visit www.siuslaw.k12.or.us to check out a “Wish List” for other items that are needed. Marteen Lee Wick March 13, 1951 ~ March 28, 2016 A celebration of life will be held for Marteen Lee Wick on Tuesday, April 5 th at 3pm at the Florence Events Center. Marteen was born in Vancouver, Washington, but spent the majority of her life in Florence, Oregon. She let this world much better than she found it on Monday, March 28, 2016, for the greatest adventure of her life. She graduated in 1969 from Siuslaw High School where she missed receiving the perfect attendance award by one day. In December of 1969, she married her once in a lifetime partner and best friend, John Wick. h ey enjoyed 46 years together exemplifying love, giving and sacrii ce to each other. h ey always referred to each other as “Hon”. Marteen was i rst employed in the oi ce at Berry Creek Construction. She then began work at h e Windward Inn, where she immersed herself in every job that needed to be done. She loved her time there. She eventually took over Seven Seas Travel as owner and operator. She was very good at the travel agency, as she loved to travel herself. Soon at er she sold the travel agency, she went to work at Kitchen Klutter for her sister, Penny, and eventually bought the business. She operated the Florence kitchen shop for 25 years and opened a second Kitchen Klutter in Newport 3 years ago. Marteen had a great business sense exemplii ed by her success at owning and operating her own 3 businesses. Marteen loved the Florence community and served on numerous boards and community committees throughout the years. She generously gave back to the community in many ways. Recently she was named Florence First Citizen. She was currently serving on the Siuslaw Pioneer Museum Board and as a director for Oregon Pacii c Bank. Marteen was a very adventurous traveler and loved the roads less traveled, including numerous shortcuts leading to almost being named on Unsolved Mysteries. She loved to race jeeps in the drag races and ride snow mobiles. She loved clam digging, eating crab, animals, her garden and l owers, Oregon State University and Mariner baseball, and most of all her black lab, Bullit. Many words used to describe Marteen were: Giving, h oughtful, Caring, Compassionate, Determined, Generous, Empathetic and the best and most thoughtful git giver. All the kids called her “the greatest, most loving aunt of all.” Marteen savored every minute of life. Her father Lloyd Petersen and mother Flora Petersen, preceded her passing. She will be sorely missed by her surviving husband, John Wick, sisters Penny Merritt (Ron), Anita “Skeeter” Weatherly (Bruce), Jeanette “Snuf y” Rutherford (Burr) and stepsister, Elaine Beers. Survivors also include brother in law, Bill Wick (Becky) and Sister in Law Mary Wendling (Dan). Additional survivors include numerous nieces and nephews, too many to name, and a multitude of close friends, whom John and Marteen considered family.
