Tax help available at Siuslaw Public Library Tax time is here and AARP continues to provide free tax preparation service for senior citizens and low-income tax- payers. This service will be avail- able every Monday and Thursday from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. until Thursday, April 14, in the Bromley Room of the Siuslaw Public Library, 1460 Ninth St. In addition, this serv- ice will be available on Saturday, April 9. Bring your return from last year (including tax docu- ments), a photo ID and Social Security card(s) in addition to your 2015 tax information. Parking is available in the lot across the street from Cross Road Assembly of God Church. Note that there may be days when it is necessary to limit the number of taxpayers. Florence PTA scholarship deadline set for April 15 The Florence Community PTA announces that it will offer four $500 scholarships to 2016 high school graduates who intend to pursue a career in teaching or working with children or youth in some capacity. These scholarships are open to graduates of Siuslaw High School and home-schooled stu- dents in the Florence area. Students must plan to attend an accredited college, community or university. Students must demonstrate academic potential or achieve- ment, leadership and character. The following items must accompany the application: a financial statement, an official transcript of grades, a resume and at least one letter of recom- mendation. Applications are available through Siuslaw High School Student Services, or can be downloaded from the PTA website at www.florencepta. org. Deadline for applications is Friday, April 15. Five pieces are on display in various areas of the library’s Florence location, 1460 Ninth St. These large-format abstract works demonstrate Wold’s unique approach to using knitting techniques to create original fine art. Wold describes her tech- nique as reimagining the expressive possibilities of knitting to create fiber art. “Knitting techniques can be used to produce works of art “The versatile characteristics of knitted yarn allows one to explore color, shape, pattern and texture in a traditionally craft-focused medium. Wold’s mother taught her basic knitting techniques when she was 5 years old. “Knitting has always been a satisfying activity for me. CERT training to be offered upriver in April DEADWOOD — Upriver Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) train- ings are scheduled for Saturdays, April 9, 16, 24 and 30. The sessions cover two 3- hour modules each meeting, with a 30-minute lunchtime. The trainings are 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., and Frank Nulty is the instructor. Those who are unable to attend a session, or have to leave early, can make up those modules online at www.fema.gov/community- emergency-response-teams. There is also a 3-hour disas- ter drill scheduled for Sunday, May 1, at the Mapleton Fire Station. The first session will be at the Deadwood Community Center; an alternate site is available in Mapleton. This annual event has suc- cessfully provided funds each year for after-school enrich- ment programs, the club’s summer activities and youth athletics. This year’s tour will return to the Umpqua Valley region to visit four wineries there. “This tour is such a success- ful event for us,” said Mike Smith, current board secretary. “I am constantly humbled and amazed by the generosity and support from our community for our kids.
