SIUSLAW NEWS ❚ SATURDAY, MARCH 12, 2016 COCBR announces new executive officer Danella Bass recent- ly replaced Shauna Boyd as the Central Oregon Coast Board of Realtors (COCBR) executive officer. Uniquely, it was a switch in locations; as Bass left the Salem RMLS office for Florence, Boyd left the Florence RMLS office for Salem. Bass has spent the last 2-and-a-half years working in Salem. She was excited to have this opportunity to come to Florence and work here as both the local RMLS coordinator and the COCBR executive officer. Florence Community PTA wants to ‘link you up’ The Florence Community PTA wants to link up with 1,000 Fred Meyer card cus- tomers by the end of this school year. Don’t pass on this chance to support local schools every time you shop at Fred Meyer, which has a Community Rewards pro- gram that will give cash money to the Florence Community PTA. Every Fred Meyer cardholder can sign up to provide the PTA with free cash from every purchase, from any Fred Meyer in the Pacific Northwest. The Fred Meyer Rewards program is offered in addition to fuel points, rewards points and monthly rebates — so signing up to reward community cash to the PTA won’t diminish any of your current customer benefits. Fred Meyer is offering a simple way to contribute to all of the student programs and teacher grants provided by the Florence Community PTA. Who are PTA members? Currently, the Florence PTA is made up of 56 per- cent teachers and staff, 25 percent parents, and 19 per- cent community members. Print a membership form and learn more at www. FlorenceCommunityPTA.or g.What does the Florence PTA do? It provides teacher and staff grants for pro- grams, supplies, curriculum and equipment to all schools in the Siuslaw School District. The PTA give more than $6,000 annually to fund hands-on arts and science, the culinary kitchen, field trips and more. PTA also pays for senior scholarships for future teachers, outdoor education, drama classes, science fairs, and Civil War re-enactments, in addition to sponsoring events like the Book Fair Diner, annual tal- ent show, and the Fall Fitness Fair. Where does PTA funding come from? Primarily from fundrais- ing like the Fred Meyer Rewards program. For the past several years, Safeway used the eScrip program to support local nonprofits. With almost 1,000 local par- ticipants, Florence PTA received an average of $900 per month in donations. Unfortunately, Safeway’s corporate headquarters has decided to discontinue the eScrip program. The second largest income source for PTA is collection of Box Tops for Education. Sadly, that program is being discon- tinued by Campbell’s in June 2017. Florence PTA needs another funding source. As of March 1, 2016, the PTA has just 35 Fred Meyer customers registered for Community Rewards. Take a few minutes to sign up and help raise that num- ber to 1,000 by the end of the 2016 school year. City Lights offering exclusive live film preview series The New York Film Critics Series (NYFCS), a premiere screening company, has part- nered with the nation’s lead- ing independent cinemas, including City Lights Cinemas, to present live, in- theater events. The evenings are moderat- ed by Peter Travers, film crit- ic for Rolling Stone Magazine and ABC’s Popcorn. NYFCS offers screenings of movies before their theatri- cal release and presents inter- active, big-screen and HD broadcast with the stars and filmmakers. “Instead of waiting for weeks for some specialty film releases, this series gives Florence the chance to be among the first in the nation to experience the film — and see interviews that won’t be seen anywhere else but inside a theatre,” says Michael Falter, owner of City Lights Cinemas. The next NYFCS event, the first to appear at City Lights, will be March 16, at noon and 7:30 p.m., with preview screenings of “The Confirmation” with live on screen appearances by Clive Owen, Jaeden Lieberher and writer/director Bob Nelson. Owen shines in this come- dy about an estranged father and son whose weekend adventure leads to something they never imagined: a true family connection. “I loved Nelson’s Oscar nominated film “Nebraska,” and his new film is equally knowing about father/son relationships, which I think Florence audiences will appreciate,” says Falter. Regular ticket prices apply: $9 regular, $8 for senior, $7.50 for matinees and $6.50 for City Lights membership holders. Reliable transportation between Dead- wood and the coast? Enhanced fiber optics? Affordable hous- ing? Better access to health care? On Wednesday, March 16, community members will gather at a Siuslaw Pathways Regional Forum to hear the results of the Siuslaw Vision Project and begin to identify key action items that will enhance our community. The family friendly event is open to all interested commu- nity members living in the region. It will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Florence Senior Center community meeting space, 1570 Kingwood St. Light refreshments will be served and there will be play space for young children. The forum is the culmina- tion of the community vision- ing process that began with an online survey about communi- ty vitality and has continued through a series of community meetings and targeted focus group discussions. “I see a lot of social media posts about what is missing here and what would make it an even better place to live,” said Becky Goehring, a co- leader of the Pathways Visioning Project. “This is an opportunity for people to step up and help champion key pri- orities that will strengthen our region.” The first part of the meeting will include a presentation and discussion of the Vision Statement. During the second half, participants will choose an action area and begin exploring ways to move that idea forward. The Siuslaw Region shares the same boundaries as the Mapleton and Siuslaw School Districts and includes the com- munities of Deadwood, Swiss- home, Mapleton, Florence and Dunes City. All ages are wel- come. The project has been sup- ported by The Ford Family Foundation, the City of Florence, Florence Rotary and the Siuslaw Library District, along with community sup- port. For more information, con- tact Liz Vollmer-Buhl, project manager, at 541-520-2401, or Goehring at 541-997-9046.
